Art Academy of Cincinnati
The Art Academy of Cincinnati is a professional college of art and design affiliated with the Cincinnati Art Museum. For nearly 120 years, the Art Academy of Cincinnati has been an established and respected institution for the education of visual artists. Located primarily in Eden Park, a 184 acre metropolitan park five minutes from downtown Cincinnati, the Art Academy's location is ideal. The beautiful park setting against the backdrop of an energetic and rich cultural city, provides students with a very special environment. The small size (approximately 200 full-time students /17 full-time faculty) and focused curriculum draws a serious and committed student body. The Art Academy's programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
The Art Academy offers the four- year Bachelor of Fine Arts programs in Fine Arts and Communication Arts, an innovative Masters of Arts degree in Art Education for art teachers and a vast non-credit Community Education program. Students begin the first two years of the Bachelor of Fine Arts programs with an intense Foundation then broad media experience before they declare a major in the junior year. There is a strong emphasis on cross- disciplinary experience in studio and academic classes. Approximately one third of the 132 credits required for the undergraduate degree, are in academic studies-including fifteen credits in art history. The BFA program is on a two semester academic year. The Master of Arts in Art Education degree is a three-summer, thirty-three credit, studio-based program. The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area is home to fourteen institutions of higher education including the Art Academy, forming a consortium offering cross-registration privileges to all students.
The Art Academy of Cincinnati can't be described in terms of a traditional college. Our students are looking for an alternative to the experience of fraternities/sororities and dormitories. They are unusually focused on their artwork and most school activities revolve around open drawing sessions, trips to museums and visiting artist lectures. "Bad Hair Day" and the annual "Minumental Exhibition" are just two examples of the creative spirit at play! In such a small school, students, faculty and staff, have a warm and supportive relationship- creating a strong sense of community. The school considers the city as an extension of the "campus". There are no dormitories, rather students living in apartments in neighborhoods surrounding the school. The Admissions Office assists students in their search for housing and roommates.
