Degress Offered
Undergraduate studio and teacher preparation degrees offered by the Department of Art are the B.A., B.S., and the B.F.A. In undergraduate art history studies, the B.A. is offered. The department also offers both the M.A. and M.F.A. degrees in studio art.
Admission Requirements
1. Admission to a program of study in the Department of Art begins with meeting the application requirements as provided by Bradley University for general admission.
2. Students are accepted into the Department of Art as art majors receiving a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. A portfolio review is not required but is recommended for entry into the studio art program.
3. Upon completion of their second year of study, studio art majors declare an area of concentration from the following: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
4. Admission to the BFA degree program requires a review of the student's work by the art faculty. A student may make application for the BFA program beginning the second semester of the sophomore year and no later than the second semester of the junior year.
5. All of the courses which are required at the 100 level must be completed before a candidate may be accepted into the BFA program. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required in art at the time of application.

These statements drive BA/BS, BFA, MA, and MFA academic curricula, gallery, and visiting artist programs, and general education services offered by the Department of Art, which are central to the missions of the College and University.
Values
The faculty and staff assert the fundamental values of imagination, creativity, and communication; art as essential to life, the continuous search for knowledge, and authentic analysis of ideas; the highest standards of honesty, integrity, mutual respect, dignity, and ethical behavior in teaching, criticizing, and making art; and effective research and creative production. These values enlighten endeavors to accomplish the vision of the department and characterize the elemental motivations for the programs offered.
Principles
Working toward accomplishing its vision and embracing noble values, the faculty and staff profess the effectiveness of principles which embrace wide tolerance of ideas and modes of expression, along with informed predication upon history, traditions, and fundamentals of art as a means of departure; professional ethics, fairness, and respect in offering judgments and criticisms in teaching and peer relationships; quality teaching and professional accomplishment by faculty and staff as the primary means of affecting students in their creative development; visiting artists and interdisciplinary projects which expand opportunities for students, faculty, and staff; multicultural understandings which broaden human understanding and deepen individual creativity; and global experiences which encounter the wider array of learning and career options. These principles underlie the important methods by which the faculty and staff expect to realize its purposes.
Doing
Actions indicated include engaging a professional artist/teacher/chairperson to lead and to represent the department; improving the qualifications and standards of current faculty and staff; gaining recognition for excellence of faculty, staff, student, and programs from constituencies; enhancing and improving elements of the department on a continuing basis, including technology, interdisciplinary, multicultural, and global projects; developing partnerships with external constituents; improving communications, respect, and professional relationships within the department; strengthening art education, fundamentals and graduate programs; strengthening studio art programs through recruiting appropriate majors; advocating faculty and staff development and recognition; developing options for students including teacher training and technological expertise; and exploring the future focus of art in its context within the University. These action items are suggested for immediate and continuing attention, along with emerging items which will present themselves.
Commitment
The faculty and staff offer their resolve and commitment in order to accomplish their vision: hard work; positive attitude; learning and growing; effective teaching, research and creative production; aggressive attention to opportunities and options for students and programs; attention to departmental service especially recruiting and retention; and work toward resolution of conflicts and improvements in communications. The faculty and staff expect institutional commitment including stable financial support for human and program requirements appropriate faculty and staff development; attention to facilities upgrade and maintenance; and full consideration of initiatives emanating from qualified leadership.
The Bradley University Art Exhibition Galleries
Bradley University has exhibition galleries in Heuser Art Center and Hartmann Center for the Performing Arts. These two galleries provide Bradley with the opportunity to present exhibitions which focus upon the artists who work in alternative styles or thematic shows which heightened awareness of contemporary issues in the art world. Through programming a variety of events, the University is able to provide quality visual arts and interdisciplinary programming to the people of our primary service region and to create a presence in the community where programs are supported and attended, not only by students and faculty, but also by those living in central Illinois.
