Art

The Art Program has several goals:

1. To enrich the educational experience of all students by providing them the opportunity to view, discuss and produce works of art.
2. Provide quality baccalaureate degrees in art and art education.
3. To provide a vocational orientation to art through preparation in such areas as art education and graphic design.


Art Studio courses encourage creativity and personal exploration of ideas, concepts, materials, form and content. All Art studio courses are variable (3-6) credit, and repeatable, to develop competency unless listed otherwise. Students who wish to enroll for more than 3 credits are required to obtain instructor permission prior to registration. All students will be required to invest additional hours of work (over and above listed studio/graphic design class hours).

Music

Students may obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with emphasis in Performance or Academics; a Bachelor of Science degree in Vocal and/or Instrumental Music Education; or a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Management.

The Vocal/Instrumental Music Education degree prepares a student for music teaching licensure in the specialized areas of vocal (choral) music and/or instrumental music and general music for K-12.

The Music Management degree allows students the opportunity to gain management skills in both music and business.

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in music are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.


Speech Communication

The primary objective of the Speech Communication Program is to provide a curriculum for the student interested in developing communication skills.

Students may select a variety of majors and/or minors which include:

* speech communication
* speech communication/theatre
* speech communication: radio and television
* speech communication: public relations emphasis.


A Communication Arts and Literature major when coupled with professional education requirements leads to teacher licensure by the State of Minnesota. The philosophy of the Speech Communication Program emphasizes student initiative, creativity, and responsible involvement. Classes are structured to provide a solid philosophical, historical, theoretical, and practical basis for the discipline selected. A grade of “C-” or better is required for major/minor coursework applied toward a degree from the Speech Communication Program. All students who complete a major/minor are required to maintain a portfolio of their speech coursework throughout their years of study.

These programs offer many extracurricular and co-curricular activities which are open to all students regardless of their major. Southwest Minnesota State University speech communication graduates can be found in teaching, broadcasting, theatre, public relations, business, law, and all walks of life where the ability to communicate is essential.

Theatre Arts

The Theatre Arts Program provides a curriculum for the student interested in working in the professional theatre, attending theatre graduate school, or teaching theatre.

A major in theatre offers the student a comprehensive understanding of the theatre arts with the opportunity to specialize in acting, directing, designing, costuming, playwrighting or teaching.

The program emphasizes student initiative, creativity and responsible involvement. Classes are structured to provide a solid philosophical and practical approach to theatre.

The Theatre and Speech Communication Programs also offer combination majors and minors which include Radio and TV, Secondary Education, and Speech and Theatre.
