University of Delaware (Arts and Humanities)
Arts and Humanities
The division of Arts and Humanities includes the visual and performing arts, languages and literatures, philosophy, the Center for Material Culture Studies, the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture, and the Writing Center. While training their own majors, minors, and graduate students at the M.A.- and/or Ph.D.-level for a diverse spectrum of careers, these departments, programs, and centers also serve a University undergraduate student population by:
* providing instruction in both writing and foreign languages (ENGL 110, Critical Reading and Writing, is the only course required of all University students; although the College of Arts and Sciences is the only college at UD with a foreign language requirement, increasing numbers of students in other Colleges are treating foreign language study as an essential competency for the 21st century job market)
* featuring an exciting palate of general education courses, many of which have been recognized on campus or by external organizations for their innovative pedagogy, and
* offering musical performance and studio arts opportunities to non-majors.
Signature features of the division include: 1) a unique partnership with the Winterthur Museum that supports the only undergraduate Art Conservation program in the U.S., two highly selective and internationally acclaimed interdisciplinary M.A.-level programs (the M.S. in Art Conservation and the M.A. in Early American Culture), and the newly established Ph.D. program in Preservation Studies; 2) a Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP) enrolling one class of M.F. A. candidates in acting, technical production, and stage management every four years; and 3) strong graduate programs in Art, Art History, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, and Music, all of which contribute greatly to the College’s undergraduate teaching mission while training the next generation of university teachers, scholars, and artists.

The Bachelor of Arts degree offers the student the opportunity for professional study in music within a liberal arts context. A Master of Music degree is offered at the graduate level.
Theatre
Once every four years, a group of exceptionally talented students is selected for admission to the University of Delaware's Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP), a graduate-level conservatory, for three years of training leading to the Master of Fine Arts degree.
The B.A. in Theatre Production is designed for those students who are interested in learning about the production areas of the theatre, i.e., scenery, lighting, properties, sound, stage management, and costumes, and who desire the opportunity to explore these production areas through the prescribed course work and laboratory experiences of a major. Students' practical experiences in the production areas described above will include participating in the production of plays of the Professional Theatre Training Program. In addition, a theatre minor is offered which is designed to deepen the student's appreciation of the theatre as a liberal art.
