Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Arts and Humanities School)
Art
The academic programs in art at MVNU allow students to expand their knowledge and appreciation for the visual arts along with developing their talents to be successful in highly creative and energetic careers. The focus of our program is designed for students who are uniquely expressive and have a desire to further their artistic abilities.
As a visual fine arts you have a variety of directions in majors, minors, and collaborative double majors from which to choose. You can focus on studio art, art education, or art history within the Art Department, or pursue a double major or minor in graphic design offered by the Graphic Design Department.
Graphic Design
We live in one of the most visually oriented societies in history, and advances in technology continue to make it more so. Graphic design is everywhere, and the influence of designers affects every aspect of modern life. Someone designed the packages that hold the products we buy, as well as the advertising (billboards, print, television, Web) that accompanies them.
ew professions contact as many individuals on a daily basis as does graphic design. In a world that is often confusing and gloomy, graphic designers help create clear communication and beauty for daily life. The field needs designers who understand the need to affect society and culture in ways that are constructive and positive.
At MVNU, we want to help students learn to do just that. As a graphic design student, you take core courses in graphic design, and then choose an area of emphasis in either art or communication, depending on your strengths and long-term goals.
Possibilities exist for double majors or minors in areas such as art, communication, print communication, or business administration. In class, you use sophisticated computers and learn software programs as well as employ traditional art processes. You study art history, color theory, design, and photography, all the while training your eye to learn what strong design really is, developing a personal aesthetic, and understanding how to work in a world of clients and message communication.
Music
Music enriches our lives, stirs our emotions, and stimulates our intellect. The pursuit of a career in music is a high calling, an area of service that makes the world a better place to live. As a music major, you will be prepared to engage the world as a skillful and thoughtful musician in your chosen endeavor.
The music programs at MVNU will provide you with solid training from seasoned professionals, offering experiences in classical and contemporary music in a variety of venues. Within the context of a liberal arts education, students are guided in the development of their God-given creative talents and abilities.
Outstanding faculty and excellent academic programs will provide you with the experiences necessary for a meaningful and productive future in the field, one that satisfies your personal and professional aspirations, uplifts the music profession, and serves the cause of Christ.
If you are looking to serve the church and society through music, the MVNU Music Department can help you understand and appreciate the aesthetic and cultural contributions that musicians have made throughout history and in today’s world.
You’ll benefit from extensive performance opportunities, such as regular collaboration with drama students in producing Broadway-style musicals and operettas, senior recitals, laboratory performances, and ensemble concerts and tours. from one or more of three choral groups and individual instruction from our talented faculty who will equip you from their own experiences in teaching or leading music in their communities.
Multiple tracks within the major offer opportunities for specialization in music education, church music, music and worship, music performance, and general music.
