BSU Music

Through the Department of Music, Bemidji State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Music Education, Teacher Licenser and a Bachelor of Arts in Music. In addition to these two majors in music, students may also earn Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees with minors in music. The full-time faculty of the Department of Music, as well as its part-time specialists, are committed to the intellectual, musical and social growth of the student musicians who attend Bemidji State University.

Bemidji State University is known as an excellent school for preparing musicians and music educators. The majority of music majors at BSU are involved in studies toward the Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. Graduates are satisfactorily placed in music education positions at close to a 100% rate. Students have also selected study toward the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, allowing for individualized tailoring of studies in areas such as Arts Management and Composition. Many graduates choose to enter graduate school or pursue careers in related fields. Graduates of our programs include music professors at major universities, the Director for Public Relations for the Minnesota Orchestra, and the former Director of the Minnesota Opera Company. Recent BSU music graduates have won honors at national and international competitions, including the MTNA Collegiate Artist Competition.

Theatre and Speech Communication

Until 1969, Theatre and Speech Communication was an area in the Department of Languages and Literature. Courses in speech and theatre, however, existed at the university long before the dpeartment did. The theatre program's first permanent facility (1951) was a converted section of Deputy Hall. The first Speech/Drama major entered the curriculum in 1958. In the summer of 1971, the Dpeartment of Speech and Theatre moved into its new facilities: the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex, where we are still quartered today. The department, with the support of our college, has committed a good deal of resources renovating and updating the technological capabilities of this facility.

Mission

Departmental Objectives
Speech Communication: The Department of Theatre and Speech Communication believes that effective oral communication is essential in our contemporary society. Therefore, the Department is committed to training students in the concepts and skills of speech communication.
Theatre: The Department has two basic inter-related goals in the theatre arts area of study. It strives to provide (a) classroom and (b) production experience to the students as a means of contributing to the development of their intellect and aesthetic sensitivity.
The academic goal of the Department is to provide every student at Bemidji State University with the basic opportunity to study the history of world theatre and the major genres and period of dramatic literature. Introductory courses in stage performance, technical theatre, and production design are also offered. Advanced courses in dramatic theory, production principles and design, and senior projects requiring knowledge of beginning research methodologies are open to qualified students. The academic curriculum of the Department, through its major revision in 1 989 and its further revision in 1 996 for conversion to semesters, reflects a significant reappraisal of performing arts within the humanities and a broader interdisciplinary intersect with the University. We believe strongly and implicit in the need to foster positive and productive understanding of the relationships among culturally diverse populations. The course in Asian theatre, in particulor, is intended to cause students to think more globally about the role culture plays in the way people think, feel and act.
The academic curriculum is designed to provide the broad general base of theatre knowledge within the context of the cultural background described above. Based on recent history, we also are committed to preparing theatre majors for graduate study, and thus incorporate numerous research and writing assignments in various courses. We also encourage students to take courses from other departments to enrich the r preparation: visual arts, vocal training, movement and dance, computer-assisted design, model building, electronics, history, literature, foreign languages, etc.

Department of Visual Arts

Art is a visual response to the human condition. An educated, artistic vision includes knowledge of the history and theory of creative work and studio experience that nurtues individual creative expression and critical thinking.

The Department's B.A. and B.F.A.degrees prepare students as visual artists and graphic designers. The B.F.A. degree places a particular emphasis on studio work. The B.S. degree in teacher licensure prepare students for elementary/secondary classroom teaching. The Department of Visual Arts is a full partner with the Department of Industrial Technology in the Design Technology program. The Department offers three exhibition spaces that present local, regional, national, and international exhibits. The gallery program also maintains permanent collections in ceramics and prints.
