The Art Photography

The Art Photography program offers courses in B&W, color, alternative processes, digital photography, basic studio lighting and a survey of contemporary trends in photography. Our classes emphasize technical skills and creative image making. We have an excellent facility and an outstanding faculty and staff. Art Photography is part of the Art Studio program in the Visual, Applied, and Performing Arts Division. All Art Photography classes transfer either to the UC or CSU systems.

Facilities

Lab Equipment

The Cabrillo College Photography program has facilities that allow for studio work, digital imaging, black and white photography, alternative photographic processes, and color photography. The department has large and medium format cameras, pinhole cameras, Holgas, film processing tanks and reels, and other equipment for student use. In addition, students may use or checkout tripods, cable releases, light meters, flashes, lights with stands, books, changing bags and more.

The lab space consists of two separate darkroom areas. One side of the lab is dedicated for use by beginning photography students. The other side is used by students continuing on in photography. Each darkroom has 24 variable contrast enlargers with the ability to print 35mm to 4x5 film sizes. The spacious darkroom has five large stainless steel sinks with state of the art ventilation hoods.

The intermediate/advanced photography darkroom also has a Fujimoto CP51 20” color processor. Five of the enlargers are in their own individual rooms, which allows color and black and white processing to be done at the
same time.

There are two large film-processing rooms each equipped with chemicals, film loading rooms, film washers and a film dryer.

There are two large print finishing areas used for instructor lectures, and for drying, matting, and mounting prints.

The intermediate/advanced side has a UV light area for alternative processing printing.
There are 4 gallery viewing areas in the photo lab for class and individual student shows. One viewing area is called “Blink” where students sign up to display a one-week show.

There is a large classroom with gallery lighting that is used for instruction, video presentations and critiques. The classroom is also used as a lighting studio and equipped with studio lights and large format cameras.

The photo area has a Mac computer lab, with 12 G4 computers each with 15’’ screens. There are flatbed, slide, and negative scanners, and an Epson 2000P Archival printer. The Mac lab is equipped with a video projection unit & screen for teaching demos. The Mac lab also offers supervised open lab hours for individual
student use.

The Cabrillo Photography Department is located on the entire top floor of building 350.

Art Studio

The Art-Studio Program offers beginning and intermediate courses that provide students with the knowledge and experience needed for a broad understanding of the visual arts. For beginning students, the curricula offer drawing and composition, two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, and art history. After completing the four core courses in studio art, students may then advance to intermediate courses and complete their major by concentrating their course work in one of the studio art discipline options.

Career opportunities include: exhibiting artist, art teacher, graphic designer, artist/photographer, art illustrator, art technician, commercial artist, and other professions in creative endeavor. Career opportunities are also available in galleries, museums, and art organizations.

Dance

Dance as an academic discipline encompasses the role of dance as a performing art, as well as roles in other areas, including education, health, anthropology, history, and the science of human movement. Bachelor's and graduate degrees in dance and related fields provide a variety of career opportunities in the public and private sectors.

Many four-year colleges and universities offer emphases in areas such as modern dance, ballet, performance, choreography, musical theater, dance education, dance therapy, somatics, dance ethnology, dance history, and criticism. Specialties are also offered in physical therapy for dancers, dance for children, seniors, and special education.

Music

The music curriculum provides a program for the student who wishes to (1) pursue an advanced degree in music, (2) become a professional musician, (3) prepare for a career in public school teaching, (4) broaden a general knowledge of music, or (5) develop performance skills. Students will be given the theory, keyboard, and sight-reading skills necessary to transfer to a four-year college music curriculum, where they will be expected to pass proficiency exams in each of these areas. Participation in at least one principal performance group is highly recommended for each semester.

Opportunities for other careers in commercial music are found in music publishing, composition, nightclub entertainment, dance bands, backup singing groups, lead singing, recording studios, music sales, music retailing, librarian work, and management. The requisite background for these careers is found in the basic music major curricula plus optional specialized training courses.
