Department of Art Mission Statement
The mission of the Department of Art is the practice and the teaching of art. The Department of Art's mission embraces the College of Arts and Humanities' emphasis on the enrichment of our students' educational experiences. The Department strives to develop and sustain our students' professional aspirations in Graphic Design, Art Education and the Studio Arts. Through our programs we seek to identify the rich creative and intellectual potential of students as they awaken to the lifelong value placed on critical and analytical skills. It is the Department's belief that an art education builds the expertise necessary for students seeking to assume their respective roles as practitioners, educators, and informed patrons of the visual arts.
Undergraduate Programs
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design
A comprehensive studio art degree for students desiring to pursue careers in the field of graphic design and visual communication. The program emphasizes critical thinking through the exploration of digital and print media. After completion of the Art core and pre-graphic Design prerequisites students are required to complete the Graphic Design Specialization requirements, including a contracted field experience. Transfer students are encouraged to complete a contracted field experience. Transfer students are encouraged to complete as many of the transferable Art requirements as possible prior to enrolling at CWU.
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art
A comprehensive studio art degree for students desiring to pursue studio art-related careers or seeking artistic enrichment, with disciplinary studies in ceramics, computer art, drawing, jewelry/metalsmithing, painting, photography, sculpture, and wood design. In addition to core and other required courses, students are required to complete a 24 credit "area of concentration" requirement in a single discipline. Transfer students are encouraged to complete as many of the transferable Art requirements as possible prior to enrolling at CWU.
Bachelor of Art in General Art
A general art degree for students seeking artistic enrichment or wishing to pursue art-related careers such as Art Therapy, Arts Administration and Consulting, and Art Gallery Management. Students interested in art-related careers are advised to also complete an appropriate minor or course selections with the assistance of an advisor.
Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art: Teaching
A comprehensive studio-based program which qualifies students to teach art at either the elementary or secondary levels in regular or self-contained classrooms. The program requires additional special methods and teacher preparation courses offered through the Teacher Education Programs Department and a minor.
Graduate Programs
The Department of Art offers two graduate degree programs for students wishing to study visual art beyond the baccalaureate level. Each degree requires that candidates complete coursework in art concepts and criticism, art history, studio area of concentration, electives, and a creative thesis project.
Master of Arts
A 45 credit program which offers students advanced study in the various studio areas and in art history. The M.A. is intended for students who desire graduate-level training in art and helps prepare them for various arts-related careers and for further advanced studies in art.
Master of Fine Art
A 90 credit terminal degree program which provides students with professional levels of competency and experience in studio art. The M.F.A. program qualifies students for careers as teachers in higher education, as professional studio artists, and for other studio-arts related vocations. Facilities
The Department of Art is located in Randall Hall, a two-story, 82,000 square foot building designed for visual art instruction. Within the confines of the building are large specialized facilities for our various studio arts disciplines. Included are two large well-lit painting studios, two large well-lit drawing studios, a screen-printing studio, a facility for printmaking and papermaking, and classrooms dedicated to the instruction of art education and basic design. In addition, the building houses a comprehensive ceramics facility, including hand-building, wheel-throwing, glazing, clay mixing and kiln areas, a well appointed jewelry and metalsmithing studio including, fabrication and forming, casting, electroforming, and finishing areas, a large photography studio including, black and white and color labs, a sizable sculpture facility complete with fabrication and foundry areas, and a well equipped wood design facility. A Macintosh computer lab, equipped with 20 Macintosh G5 work stations, scanners, and advanced printing capabilities, is also located in Randall Hall. The computers are outfitted with a variety of graphics software and the lab is fully networked with high-speed internet access to the world-wide-web.
Randall Hall also houses the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery. With assistance from the Associated Students of CWU, the gallery maintains an active exhibition schedule featuring contemporary art exhibits throughout the year to the campus community. The gallery also features thesis exhibitions of the department's graduate students.
The Reino and Naomi Randall Visiting Lecturer Series brings speakers of regional and national stature to our campus to complement academic and gallery events.
