Interior Design Major: Overview

A Career in Interior Design

Interested in interior design as a profession? This program prepares you to be a professional with a sound background in design basics, creative problem solving, technical skills, working with collaborative teams and clients, and an understanding of industry business practices. A special feature of Chaminade's interior design program is the emphasis on environmentally friendly design. This is the only interior design program in the state of Hawai'i.

Our 4-year Bachelor of Arts program, plus active participation in the Student Chapter of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers), puts students on track for professional licensing. Our students participate every year in the ASID student competition.

Students have opportunities for hands-on experience throughout their study at Chaminade. The program focuses on interiors for residential, commercial, health care, office/corporate, and hospitality industry environments. These projects are often in partnership with local architecture and design professionals which allow for on-site observation at construction sites, progress reporting and installation experiences.


Personal guidance and mentoring

At Chaminade, teachers are closely involved with students. Your professors will know you. You can get help quickly if you need it. You will never be an unknown face lost in a crowd of hundreds of students in a lecture hall. Our ratio of students to faculty is 17 to 1. In this close-knit community, you will also get to know your classmates very well.

Students get an understanding of many aspects of interior design including:

* History of art and architecture
* Design process
* Use of color, textiles, and lighting in design
* Technical skills including drafting, CAD, photography, presentation techniques
* Professional ethics, project management & business methods
* Universal design and sustainable (green) design principles
* Human factors & the built environment
* Dynamics of client interaction & collaborative teams
* Communication of design solutions, including multi-media
