Department of Art & Design

The Southern Arkansas University Department of Art & Design offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (B.F.A.) with emphasis in either studio or graphic design. The B.F.A. program's primary goal is to prepare students for careers in professional fields of art with its secondary purpose to prepare the student for further graduate studies in art. Those students who with to pursue a career in teaching art in the public schools can pursue the B.F.A. degree, and then receive teaching certification through the M.A.T. degree. Those students interested in pursuing this route should refer to the College of Education for specific requirements.

The art major is required to participate in a senior exhibition to be presented before graduation from Southern Arkansas University The Department of Art & Design may retain one work of art from the student for its permanent collection.

Within the Brinson Art Building, the main art facility on campus, there is a great variety of available resources. There is a 1600 square foot contemporary gallery space with hallway areas that are designed for the exhibition of artwork. The gallery maintains a full exhibition schedule of contemporary art. There are also specialized studios for painting and drawing, design, sculpture, and ceramics. The building has two black and white darkrooms. There is a large lecture room, several smaller seminar rooms, a student lounge, a computer lab, and faculty offices.

The award-winning Brinson Fine Arts Building was designed for the artist and student. Studios are well lit, well ventilated and designed to accommodate all disciplines. There is an active art gallery which exhibits work by artists of national and international reputation, faculty and student works, and cultural artifacts. There are also periodic visits by artists and other art professionals each semester.

The city of Magnolia boasts one of the most progressive public art programs in the U.S. Magnolia Murals, a community arts organization, has organized an ongoing large scale outdoor mural project. Each year since 1992, a wall in the downtown business district has been painted by a different internationally-renowned muralist. Magnolia Arts also sponsors and schedules cultural events in conjunction with SAU.

SAU Department of Music

The Music Department at Southern Arkansas University, a department in the SAU College of Liberal and Performing Arts, is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music. We offer the Bachelor of Music Education degree with an emphasis in vocal, instrumental, or keyboard, a music degree designed to prepare music majors to teach elementary or secondary music, teach music in private studio, or enter graduate school. Students who do not wish to major in music also have the opportunity to participate in performance ensembles and take applied music lessons and other courses such as Music Theory and Music History and Literature.

The Music Department consists of a highly qualified and caring faculty dedicated to students' musical and personal development. Class sizes are generally small, allowing for maximum individual attention. In addition to performances by students and faculty, each year the department, along with Magnolia Arts, brings guest artists to campus through its Performing Arts Series.


Theatre & Mass Communication

The Department of Theatre and Mass Communication offers programs designed to acquaint students with the nature of communication and to prepare them for professional work in a variety of fields. The department offers a bachelor’s degree in theatre and a bachelor’s degree in mass communication with an emphasis in broadcast journalism and an emphasis in print journalism. Courses are designed to prepare the major for work in mass communication, theatre and graduate study in mass communication and theatre. The non-major should gain the ability to participate effectively in the various form of communication with an emphasis in broadcast journalism or print journalism. A heightened appreciation of the theatre and other communicative arts should result.

In addition, minors in theatre, broadcast journalism and print journalism are available for students majoring in related fields. The mass communication curriculum has a core of introductory courses common to all mass media fields and offers academic emphases in digital media production and print journalism. The department also offers practical experience on the weekly student newspaper, The Bray and the yearbook, The Mulerider.

The theatre curriculum offers classroom training and production experience for the serious student of theatre, teachers in theatre, and the humanist seeking elective hours of work and study. SAU theatre produces four show each academic year.
