Southern Utah University (College of Performing and Visual Arts)

We offer students opportunities to develop as artists and scholars through a wide range of courses and experiences designed to broaden their knowledge and increase their skills. Numerous performances, recitals, special events, and exhibitions throughout the year provide ways to apply what is learned in the classroom, studio, or rehearsal setting. Our talented and dedicated faculty and staff are deeply committed to the development and future success of our students.

Mission Statement

Our educational mission is to acquaint SUU students with the visual and performing arts, and to educate and train our majors to develop careers and a life-long involvement in the arts.

The mission is fulfilled in two major ways: through the CPVA’s academic departments and graduate program offering a comprehensive curriculum, and the programming of frequent performances, exhibitions, and related events designed to give students opportunities to develop as artists and scholars and to enrich the campus and community.

Our mission also helps guide us in our goal of making the arts visible and accessible, exciting and innovative, and an integral part of the intellectual and cultural life of Southern Utah University and the surrounding communities.

The CPVA offers undergraduate degrees in the departments of Art and Design, Music, and Theatre Arts & Dance. In addition, we offer a comprehensive MFA graduate degree in Arts Administration. The curriculum and the efforts of the highly qualified faculty and dedicated staff are further enhanced by affiliations with the Tony award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival, the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, the Halversen String Quartet, and the American Folk Ballet.

We seek students who are highly motivated, dedicated, enthusiastic, disciplined, creative, and resourceful. We also challenge our faculty, staff, and students to achieve the highest standards of excellence. Graduates of the College of Performing and Visual Arts find successful careers in education as arts teachers or as artists, designers, musicians, performers, production specialists, scholars or arts administrators. Our graduates are regularly admitted to nationally prominent graduate and professional schools.

Department of Art and Design
Bring your ideas to life through intensive experiences in painting, drawing, printmaking, graphic design, illustration, ceramics, sculpture, photography, art education, and art history. Take courses for your personal development, general education, to obtain one of several minors, or major in a creative visual art. Our courses emphasize sound training in studio areas and understanding of art's past and present in order to build a solid foundation for individual expression.

We offer two types of degrees; one, a liberal arts degree that focuses on knowledge about art in the context of a broad course of general studies. It emphasizes the ability to articulate that knowledge through language, writing and hands on studio work and will include a minor of the student’s choosing. These courses of study lead to the Bachelor of Arts in Art History or the Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art degrees (BA). The second type of degree is a professional degree in a studio area. These courses of study lead to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design, Art Education, or Studio Arts in one of four emphasis areas. They prepare students for professional studio careers, teaching, and graduate studies in a studio discipline.

Department of Music
The Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and offers SUU students a wide array of musical opportunities that can lead to a performance degree in music or a teaching degree in music. We also offer numerous performance electives for both music majors and non-majors, in such areas as Opera Theatre, Concert Choir, OPUS [Chamber Choir], Orchestra, Band, Jazz Band, and several small ensembles. Because the SUU music faculty has an exceptional combination of both teaching and performing expertise, our students have won state, regional, and national recognition for their efforts, both at SUU and after graduation and have gone on to teaching music and professional performance careers.

Department of Theatre Arts and Dance
The Department of Theatre Arts and Dance is a successful, dynamic, and respected undergraduate training program dedicated to developing some of the brightest and best theatre and dance artists and educators of tomorrow. Faculty, who regularly perform, design, choreograph, and direct on a national and international level, pride themselves in creating deeply-personalized learning experiences and are dedicated to the development and future success of all our students. A student’s classroom encompasses the studio, the stage and the production laboratory. Alongside elaborate productions on the main stage, are the quality programs that are produced by our student organizations. Undergraduate students have ample opportunities to choreograph, design, create, perform, and have their work reviewed on regional and national levels.

Master of Fine Arts - Arts Administration
In the MFA Arts Administration program, we invite students to learn the skills that help them “Make Art Happen!” Arts administrators blend a love of the arts with the professional business skills necessary to promote, maintain, and fund arts organizations. This two year, year-round program teaches students to develop the skills of strategic planning, marketing, fundraising, budgeting/finance, advocacy, education, program development and community relations. MFA students work alongside arts management professionals in the MFA affiliates: the Utah Shakespearean Festival, the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery and the College of Performing and Visual Arts. The unique blend of classroom involvement and hands-on practical experience propels students into the Arts Administration job market that is desperately seeking trained arts managers.
