College of Saint Benedict
Art Department
We think the best way to help artists develop is by surrounding them with their peers and exposing them to brilliant faculty and visiting artists. Combine that with a curriculum that stresses the artistic fundamentals, and you can plan to learn more about art than you ever expected.
You will learn, for example, techniques, trends, the methods of mavericks and how to create (or shape) your own artistic direction. Think of us as a kind of boot camp for artists, because we know this is one of the most important choices you will ever make.
Mission and Learning Goals
The CSB/SJU art department is committed to building and sustaining an environment of creative freedom, personal expression and professional discipline, while exploring the relationship of these attributes to communal and social consciousness.

Music Department
No matter your interests— vocal or instrumental, jazz or classical—we have opportunities that will let you stretch yourself musically. We have the facilities, the environment and the community to support your musical interests. Our philosophy is "Find Your Music Within."
Mission and Learning Goals
Music is the arrangement of sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, through melody, rhythm, harmony, and timbre. It makes possible a language which expresses our deepest intuitive and creative nature. Education in the discipline of music includes the study of music theory, music history, literature, performance, and composition.
The Music Department educates music majors in the university setting through concentrations in Liturgical Music, Music Composition, Music Studies, and Performance, as well as, professional programs in Choral and Instrumental Music Education. Music majors should attain an understanding of the historical, theoretical, pedagogical and cultural principles which have contributed to the art music tradition, as well as competence in performance. The department educates all students (music majors/minors and the general student of any major), both individually and collaboratively, through appropriate courses in:
* music history, theory, and appreciation
* applied instrumental, and vocal instruction
* choral and instrumental ensembles
The Music Department seeks to shape “an integrative environment for learning which stresses intellectual challenge, open inquiry, collaborative scholarship and artistic creativity." (CSB/SJU Coordinate Mission Statement). As a faculty we want to create this environment by (1) broadening and deepening the knowledge and understanding of all aspects of music through research and publication, and (2) enriching the lives of students, faculty and communities - on both the national and international level - with performances of a wide variety of music. The excellence, authenticity, and originality of these performances will also serve as models for future performances by students and provide a basis for developing informed and critical listening skills.
Theater Program
CSB/SJU have one of the finest undergraduate theater programs in the Upper Midwest. The theater department brings together a dedicated faculty with strong ties to professional theater companies, a course of study that emphasizes the interrelated nature of all facets of dramatic production and an annual program of both faculty-directed and student-directed plays.
In classes as well as productions, theater students at CSB/SJU learn by doing. Resident and visiting faculty members continually bring new ideas, techniques and challenges to students.
Mission and Learning Goals
The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University theater department is dedicated to the education of the general student as well as the theater major. This is achieved by helping the general student understand that theater is formalization of human experience intended to serve several functions. These functions include: a confrontation with our humanity, an illumination of diverse constructions of reality and a celebration of our spirits. Coupled with this understanding of function is a developed appreciation of the many artistic contributions necessary to the making of theater art.
For the theater major the department is committed to scholarly and artistic creativity, to the integration of theory and experience, to the dynamics of theatrical process and to positive human values. The program emphasizes the importance of a broad base of knowledge and theatrical experience as a foundation for later specialization. The faculty perceives the theatrical process as being a collaborative endeavor, unifying the diverse disciplines of costume, set and lighting with the acting of text. This collaboration establishes a strong creative community building integrated theatrical events. The curriculum and performance schedule is structured with sufficient range to supply the fundamentals for all the production and scholarly areas. The department vigorously encourages students to accept a life long responsibility for expressing their artistic ideas; this requires a personal awareness and cultivation of their integrity, intelligence and talent, as well as competence in basic theatrical skills.
