Art Education

The B.S.Ed. program in art education prepares highly qualified art teachers who possess the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to promote high levels of learning for P-12 students. In art studio courses, general education courses, art education courses, and various field experiences, candidates have multiple opportunities to demonstrate excellence in teaching, scholarship, and professionalism. Significant features of the program include:

* 54 semester hours of art history and studio taught by faculty in the Art Department that give breadth as well as depth and provide experiences in both fine and applied art;

* ten semester hours of general education courses and six semester hours of art education courses (three hours in elementary art methods and 3 hours in middle and high school methods) that include field experience components;

* carefully sequenced and diverse pre-student teaching field experiences that offer candidates a realistic environment for developing and refining knowledge, skills, dispositions, and performances derived from INTASC principles prior to student teaching;

* emphasis on technology in general education, in art courses, and in professional education courses;

* courses in classroom management and integration of technology in conjunction with student teaching.

The goals of the M.Ed. program in Art Education reflect the belief that candidates should display proficiency before they enter advanced study and should develop and demonstrate expertise as they complete their programs. For this reason, program goals are similar for candidates in initial and advanced programs, with the difference lying in the expected level of performance.

The M.Ed. Program in Art Education requires a professional core (7 credits), a studio/art education concentration core (23 credits), general education electives (6 credits), and a thesis/exhibition. Individual needs and interests are addressed through the opportunity to select courses from a variety of studio offerings.

Ceramics

Ceramics at Columbus State offers a comprehensive series of courses for the ceramic artist / potter.

Students in Ceramics I are exposed to all of the
primary skills for ceramic art making; students spend about half of the semester hand-building and half the semester learning to throw on the potters wheel.

The semester begins with extensive demonstrations and lectures on fundamental construction methods, glaze application, glaze chemistry and pyro-plasticity (fire and how things melt). During slide lectures, a range of historic and contemporary examples of ceramic art is shown to this class throughout the semester.

Students in Ceramics II / III and Advanced methods explore a range of projects that relate to their interests in the material, often culminating in a Senior Exhibition.

Metals/Jewelry

The Metals/Jewelry area offers students an opportunity for concentrated studio work involving both traditional and innovative
approaches to form, process and material. Metals courses introduce techniques and processes of non-ferrous metals, including copper, brass, nickel and silver. Beginning level students learn hammering, chain making, soldering and fabrication.
Techniques such as casting, forming, etching, patination, enameling, and metal weaving are covered in intermediate through
advanced levels.

Through slide lectures, students gain an understanding of metals
and adornment in their various cross-cultural forms, both historical
and contemporary. Through questioning and exploration of materials, students explore their own expressive and conceptual interests, which may include fabrication of jewelry , and functional or sculptural objects. Students work closely with the faculty to develop an individual approach and body of work culminating in their Senior Exhibition.

Printmaking

The printmaking program at CSU emphasizes skill and technical command with particular attention to the development of ideas and concepts.

Students learn the diverse skills involved in monotype, intaglio, relief and lithographic printing. Class discussions of the history of printmaking as well as instruction in contemporary techniques help students find their place in printmaking today.

Students in Printmaking I focus on the basics of printmaking; relief and intaglio methods including monotype, collograph, zinc and copper etching, woodcut and linocut.

Students in Printmaking II/Advanced methods focus on lithography and more complicated relief and intaglio techniques with special emphasis on the student’s interests .

Sculpture

The Sculpture program at CSU examines three-dimensional media as a point of departure for critical thought and problem solving. Students explore a variety of techniques and processes for making sculpture, including modeling in clay, plaster, mold making,
woodworking, metal techniques, and mixed media approaches. Traditional and non-traditional methods are discussed as a way to help students develop concepts. Class discussions, slide lectures and critiques provide further exposure to contemporary issues in sculpture. Sculpture students learn to exercise techniques as well as develop design skill, conceptual awareness and aesthetic sensibilities.

The Sculpture Studio includes a fully equipped woodshop with equipment for the fabrication, construction and carving of wood. The metal facilities offer 2 mig welders, an arc welder, a plasma cutter, chop saw, drill press, oxy acetylene cutting, brazing
and welding as well as a gas forge and multiple hand tools for chasing and forming.
