Majors, Minors & Departments

Fine and Applied Arts Department
About the Department
The Fine and Applied Arts Department is a place to make connections. You will find us in the Kennedy Academic Building on the South Campus, with our faculty offices, classrooms, studios, and MacIntosh computer lab on the third floor and additional music facilities and a ceramics studio on the first floor. The MacIntosh lab features current hardware and software, plus an Epson Wide-Format Printer capable of printing up to 24-inch wide text and graphics. Additionally, there is a photography lab in the Hafer Academic Building.
The department offers majors in Graphic Design and Visual Arts, and minors in Graphic Design, Studio Arts, Dance, and Music. Our students earn credit through internships at local advertising and design agencies, galleries, and other businesses.
The Central Liberal Arts Curriculum course, Introduction to Fine Arts, engages students in an integrated experience in the visual arts, dance, and music. Many students elect courses in dance, music and the visual arts to satisfy their upper-level requirements. Private for-credit music lessons in guitar, piano, and voice are also popular electives.
The Fine and Applied Arts faculty are active as graphic designers, artists, performers, all-college committee members and leaders, and most of all as energetic teachers connecting daily with students. One highlight of the year is “Careers in the Arts,” an evening of conversation with a panel of professional artists and designers. To cap off each spring semester, the Student Visual Art Exhibit opens to the public on North Campus, the Chamber Chorale and other student musicians perform, and “Curry Dances” showcases the talents of our dance classes.
New Graphic Design Major
The advancing technological environment has brought visual information to a new and important role in many professional settings. Graphic Design is one of the fastest growing professions. At Curry College, students have access to state-of-the-art computer facilities, small class sizes, mentorship and instruction from design professionals, as well as internship opportunities.
The major is professionally geared within the context of a liberal arts education.
Minors
Dance
Students may declare a minor in dance to complement a major in any other area of study. The combination of a dance minor with a major in health, psychology, business management, or visual arts, for example, may lead, respectively, to graduate study and/or careers in such fields as dance/health education, expressive therapies, or arts administration. A minor in dance may also enhance the preparation and competitiveness of students enrolled in the teacher licensure programs.
A student who decides to declare the dance minor must do so through either a member of the dance faculty or the chairperson of Fine and Applied Arts.
The dance faculty works with the student to plan a sequence of courses most appropriate to individual background and goals. All dance courses may be repeated for additional credit.
In addition to the requirements listed below, the faculty encourages dance minors to elect an inter-area field experience which applies a knowledge of dance in a field placement appropriate to the student’s major.
Graphic Design
The Graphic Design minor begins with a foundation in basic design. Further study is in design-specific software currently used in the graphic design profession. It culminates with an advanced course, Typography and Production, that pulls together all of the technical and aesthetic skills that have been taught in previous requirements.
Our state of the art computer facilities meet the demands of changing technology. We have a Macintosh computer lab dedicated solely to courses in the major. Software and hardware is continuously updated. In addition students are able to print their work on an Epson wide-format printer that prints up to 24." This allows for students to produce printed work on a professional level.
The Graphic Design minor gives an added perspective to majors in Applied Technology and Communication.
Music
The music minor is made up of a collection of courses that may include the study of music and the doing of music, both intimately connected to each other. Students may choose private music instruction in piano, guitar, voice and improvisation, repeatable for credit, and participation in the Chamber Chorale. Courses in jazz, popular, theatrical, classical and international music provide rich opportunities to study a variety of musical styles and traditions. There are performance opportunities, sometimes among student peers and sometimes open to the entire college and larger community, each semester. The music faculty enjoys a close relationship with students new to music and with those who are coming to Curry with a music background.
Studio Arts
Students may elect a minor in Studio Arts to complement their major in another area and to pursue the opportunity advance their techniques. The Studio Arts minor allows students to move through the basic techniques of visual art practice to more advanced skills in the upper level courses. This minor requires an accumulation of 15 credits.
The classes in this minor gives an added perspective to many majors. Students in the Studio Arts minor combine an interest in psychology for careers in art therapy and related fields. Education majors at all levels find studio arts practice a valuable addition to their skills.
