Grand Valley State University (Department of Art & Design at Grand Valley State University)

MISSION
The Department of Art and Design at Grand Valley State University seeks to uphold the values of a liberal education while providing an intensive engagement with the production and examination of the visual arts.

VALUES
As educators, artists, and scholars, we value investigation of the world through self-aware participation in broad cultural discourses. In addition to preparing students formally and conceptually for careers in the visual arts, the department strives to foster the broadly transferable skills of inquiry, reflection, critical analysis, dialog, and expression.

Student learning values that reflect our departmental mission:

1. Student will become familiar with the central issues and processes in their chosen area of study.

2. Students will develop competency progressively throughout the degree program and will work independently at the advanced level.

3. Students will achieve a high level of expertise in the practice of their chosen area of study.

4. Students will critique, discuss, and present their work in a professional manner.

5. Students will contribute meaningfully to artistic and regional communities beyond GVSU through engaging in learning opportunities.

FACULTY
Our faculty emphasizes a multi-faceted approach to education in the visual arts. We encourage students to explore and develop a conceptually driven practice based on rigorous studio practice, an awareness of contemporary issues and theoretical frameworks, as well as a respect for the historical contexts of art production.

facilities
Grand Valley’s Calder Art Center offers students state-of-the-art facilities and technology that surpass those of many other art programs. Whether your emphasis area employs traditional or contemporary practices, the recently expanded art building includes excellent resources ranging from woodshops to computer labs which are conscientiously maintained and regularly upgraded. GVSU offers professionally equipped programs not only in painting and sculpture, but also in such technically involved areas as graphic design, printmaking and ceramics. Students can also receive technical support from faculty and specialized staff within the department. In addition, many emphasis areas provide studios in the art building for upper level BFA students. These workspaces foster open dialogue between peers outside the classroom.

Why GVSU?
The Art and Design program at Grand Valley provides students with an experience that combines the intensity of a private art school with the broader educational resources of a liberal arts university. Our commitment to undergraduate education includes traditional studio and classroom methods, in addition to opportunities for contact with broader arts communities including: programs unique to GVSU, guest speakers and international study.
