Armstrong Atlantic State University (Department of Art, Music and Theatre (AMT))
The Armstrong Atlantic State University Department of Art, Music & Theatre is a thriving fine and performing arts department nestled in the southside of scenic Savannah, Georgia. Minutes from the breezy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and the quaint charm of the historic district of downtown Savannah, AASU fine arts students enjoy a largely sunny and temperate climate in which to find artistic inspiration.
Six bachelor level degree programs supported by 20 distinguished full time faculty and over 30 adjunct faculty members provides the more than 255 current fine arts majors masterful instruction on a highly individualized basis.
Students within the arts, and also from other majors on campus, have the opportunity to participate in more than 100 performances and art exhibits annually.
AASU Art and Art Education Program
The location of Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah provides many opportunities for internships, exhibition venues, and contact with other student artists. Savannah is rapidly becoming a center for the study of the arts. While the university is a medium size institution, classes are generally small to allow for personalized attention from qualified professors in an excellent academic environment.
There are six major areas in which a student might focus: drawing and painting, ceramics and ceramic sculpture, fiber arts, photography, digital design, and art education.
Armstrong Atlantic State University provides opportunity for students to work with art educators in public and private schools on all levels.
There are several art museums and numerous galleries located in Savannah, while major cities with art resources are within a half-day driving distance from the college. AASU's active student art education chapter of the National Art Education Association provides opportunity for students to interact and form friendships with their peers and to meet art education leaders both on the state and national levels.
AASU Music and Music Education Program
The location of Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah provides students with an excellent opportunity to hear top professional musicians perform. Many teachers on the AASU music faculty are members of the Orchestra Players of Savannah or formerly of the Savannah Symphony, a well regarded regional professional orchestra that has performed extensively throughout the years. AASU music students enjoy many opportunities to participate in or simply listen to a variety of music events in the following genres: classical, jazz, folk, and popular music in the area. The church musician also finds ample opportunity to gain professional experience in the large number of churches located in Savannah.
A student can pursue a music or a music education degree with a performance focus in vocal/choral, woodwind/brass, percussion, piano/keyboard, or jazz.
Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah provides opportunity for students to work with music educators in public and private schools on all levels.
An active student chapter of the Music Educators National Association provides opportunity for students to interact,form friendships with their peers, and meet music education leaders on both the state and national levels.
AASU Theatre Program
The Theatre program at AASU is divided between Jenkins Hall and Fine Arts Hall on the AASU campus. Fine Arts Hall, home to the main office of the Department of Art, Music and Theatre, houses numerous classrooms, rehearsal rooms, and studio spaces. The Fine Arts Gallery and the one thousand seat Fine Arts Auditorium are also in this building.
A short walk across the quad from Fine Arts Hall is Jenkins Hall, home to the Theatre faculty offices, the scene shop and the 200 seat Jenkins Hall Theater. The theater is equipped with a counter weight fly system, flexible lighting positions, a full complement of lighting instruments, standard two scene pre-set computerized board and easy access to the scene shop. The shop is equipped with pretty much every piece of cool machinery you would want to shake a stick at. Well, you wouldn't want to really shake a stick at it - because you could poke someone's eye out. At any rate, if you are looking to rip, cut, slice, chop, and pound something - the scene shop is the place for you.
There are three major areas in which a student might focus including: a Performance Track, a Design/Technical Track and a Management Track.
