Seattle Pacific University (Division of Fine and Performing Arts)

Our Department, bring together three displines in the arts: Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts. Each discipline offers students unique challenges and opportunities.

The Department of Theatre

The Department of Theatre provides students with opportunities to explore personal values, develop personal skills and gain insightful techniques of criticism - all within a distinctive philosophical and artistic environment.

The mission of the Department of Theatre is to educate, train and prepare theatre artists of character and competence who will engage and transform the culture through faithful use of their creative gifts and talents.

The Department of Music

As part of a liberal arts institution, the Department of Music seeks to provide opportunities not only for music majors to develop their skills, but also for all students who desire to enrich their education through the study of music. The Music Department is part of the Division of Fine Arts.

Students majoring in music have the advantage of a strong music major within a liberal arts setting. Students with an emphasis in music education are prepared to teach music in the elementary and secondary schools. Other emphases in music train people to use their gifts as performers, composers and as private studio teachers and for advanced study in performance, theory and literature. Music majors also may prepare for careers in music technology and music ministry.

For any student wishing to participate in music, regardless of major, there are many opportunities through ensembles, studio instruction and other coursework designed to enhance the liberal arts education in a Christian setting. All ensemble courses carry regular University credit and most require an audition or permission of the instructor for enrollment. You may find information in Course Descriptions and more extensive detail in the pages of the various activities.

SPU is a fully accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

Music Department Mission Statement

The Music Department at Seattle Pacific University seeks to be an exemplary music community committed to helping students to develop their talents and abilities fully, to appreciate cultural heritage, and to integrate music knowledge and skills in a life characterized by Christian faith, wholeness and service.

Music Department Goals

(1) We are committed to helping students develop their talents and abilities fully. As Christians, we affirm that we are formed in the image of God, and are endowed with the ability and the mandate to be creative. Therefore, we expect students to embrace their own giftedness, understand their potential, and exercise good stewardship through study, practice, and performance.

(2) Through the study of music in its cultural, sociological, and historical contexts, we seek to graduate people who appreciate cultural heritage, who understand who they are, who possess historical perspective, and who will therefore, be positive change agents in their communities.

(3) We value music as a way to serve God and the greater community. Therefore, we are committed to helping students to integrate their knowledge and skills with their faith, equipping them for lives of service.

The Department of Visual Arts

The Department of Visual Arts seeks to acquaint students with the fundamental elements and principles of visual art, to explore the techniques of various art media, and to create an awareness of the value of art by presenting the proper historical and cultural background.
