Emerson College
Emerson College is the only comprehensive college or university in America dedicated exclusively to communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. It is located in downtown Boston, at the gateway to the Theatre District and in close proximity to major media outlets. It also has facilities in Los Angeles and the Netherlands.
The College was founded in 1880 as a small school of oratory. Over the years, it has evolved into a multi-faceted college that is internationally recognized for excellence in its fields of specialization, which are communication, marketing, communication sciences and disorders, journalism, the performing arts, the visual and media arts, and writing literature and publishing.
The School of the Arts includes the departments of Visual and Media Arts, Performing Arts and Writing Literature and Publishing. In an atmosphere of shared disciplines, undergraduate and graduate students discover the ethical and global impact of the arts by studying the heritage and values of their chosen disciplines.
The Department of Performing Arts
The Department of Performing Arts' professionally active faculty guides undergraduate and graduate students in programs which offer both rigor and creative challenge.
The undergraduate programs educate students in the collaborative arts of performance and production within their historical and cultural contexts. Studio and production work are central to all concentrations in the department and are integrated into the larger context of a liberal education.
The graduate program is designed for students seeking to pursue careers at the intersection of theater and education. Many graduates have become teachers or counselors while others have worked as playwrights, directors and producers.
The arts of live theatre are central to the education offered by a communication college. Students in the Department of Performing Arts are challenged to develop a deep understanding of self along with a sense of ethical responsibility to the immediate community and society at large. Through productions, internships and other activities, students are encouraged to work in the community, exploring and developing their own roles as artists and educators.
The Department of Visual & Media Arts
The Department of Visual & Media Arts offers undergraduate and graduate programs in film, video, television, radio and audio, new media and media studies.
The programs recognize that the visual and media arts are powerful forces that affect the minds, emotions and behavior of humankind, and they seek to educate students to become informed and ethical leaders as well as creative and successful practitioners.
The faculty includes a five-time Emmy Award-winner, a filmmaker-historian who specializes in cinema of the African Diaspora, a former White House speechwriter, and the director of the Prague Summer Experience in Film.
Graduates of the program have risen to the tops of their fields in major media and entertainment organizations in Hollywood, New York and elsewhere.
The Department of Writing, Literature & Publishing
The Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing (WLP) offers undergraduate and graduate programs in disciplines ranging from poetry to screenwriting to magazine and book publishing. Its faculty includes distinguished scholars as well as internationally-acclaimed authors, and its graduate program is ranked by US News & World Report one of the best in the country.
