Enterprise-Ozark Community College (Fine Arts Division)
Fine Arts Division
The Fine Arts Division proudly boasts of the award-winning Entertainers, a musical show choir. The Entertainers perform across the state at many functions. They also compete and have won first place in state competitions and the National Peanut Festival competition annually. Faye Earnest, art instructor, is known for her mural work. A combined effort of hers with her students may be seen in the Enterprise Chamber of Commerce office on Glover Avenue.
* Studio Art
Enterprise-Ozark Community College offers a variety of studio art courses. Art Appreciation is one of the courses that many students find themselves in regardless of their major. Having an understanding of art provides students from all walks of life the opportunity to broaden their horizons and become more aware of the nature of the mysterious and all emcompassing world of art. Art Appreciation is also one of the many courses that E.O.C.C. offers on-line. With the proper basic skills and a certain amount of bravery, students can take this core course in the comfort of their own home.
Beyond that, the EOCC Fine Arts Division also offers Drawing (I and II), Painting (I and II). Two-Dimensional Composition and Computer Graphics courses are offered as stand alone courses and also in conjunction with a newly established Computer Graphics or Graphic Design Certificate program. Currently, all of these courses are taught by Leslie Gibson of Enterprise, Alabama.
* Computer Graphics
Enterprise-Ozark Community College offers three courses in computer graphics. The first course, Introduction to Computer Graphics, is focused on the use of Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator is an industry standard in graphic design and illustration. Students are afforded the opportunity to learn how to use Illustrator at a comfortable pace. They are then given the task of completing real graphic design/illustration problems like they would see in a staff or freelance job beyond school.
The second course, Computer Graphics I, focuses on the use of Adobe Photoshop. This course builds on the experiences of the first course in that after an initial period of learning to use Photoshop, students begin to use both Photoshop and Illustrator together in completing real world design projects.
The third course is aptly called Computer Graphics II. It also builds on the experiences of the first two courses but with a subtle twist. Computer Graphics II is based on the top of the line publishing software Quark Express but the student is also afforded the opportunity to work in Adobe Pagemaker. The goal is to give students experience in page layout using the Adobe line to create illustrations and the layout software to complete the printable work.
* Music Ensembles
The Enterprise-Ozark Community College Entertainers is a thirty member show choir whose purpose is to provide choreographed musical entertainment for the college, regional schools, civic organizations, military functions and community activities. The ensemble was organized in 1980 under the direction of Dr. Patricia Muller. Dr. Richard Snyder has been the director since 1990.
The Entertainers present a fast paced show with a variety of musical styles including; show tunes, patriotic, pop, rock 'n roll, Latin, country, gospel, and music from Broadway. The members of the show choir are students at EOCC and come from all over the Wiregrass region of Southeast Alabama, Northwest Florida and beyond. All students attend EOCC on an academic or performing arts scholarship.
The Entertainers consistently rate Superior in competitions and the group has received "Best in Class awards many, many times. The group has received all but one of the first place honors in the Alabama College Association Music Showcase, Show Choir Category.
Fifty concerts are presented annually by this much sought after show choir. The ensemble has performed on numerous occasions for the Governor of Alabama, the State Legislature, and at many State functions. They have appeared on regional television programs in Dothan and Montgomery for Christmas shows and special interview programs. The Entertainers have also provided entertainment for various state agencies of government, education and civic organizations like Lions and Rotary clubs.
The Entertainers have performed in exotic and prestigious locations including Lincoln Center Plaza, New York City; Parliament Square, Nassau; Six Flags Over Georgia, Atlanta; Captain Anderson's Dinner Cruise, Panama City and at the United Nations in New York City.
These young adult leaders are exemplary in performance and demeanor. They revel in the joy of singing and dancing. And they are sterling ambassadors for the college and the State of Alabama.
* Music Theory Classes at EOCC
If you have chosen to do your first two years of Music Theory at EOCC, you have made a very wise choice, indeed. Such advanced planning will enable you to take the remaining requirements at your four-year college and graduate on time. Also, you will have the distinct advantage of learning your fundamental concepts in a small class with plenty of individual attention and positive reinforcement.
The first semester is spent reviewing (or perhaps learning for the first time) the basics of the elements of music and music notation. You will become familiar with the notes on the staff, the major and minor key signatures, the structure of chords in our system of Western harmony, and the fundamental concepts of harmonic progression.
Second semester is spent learning about the correct way to write music in four-part harmony with good voice-leading and appropriate chord progressions. We will also cover seventh chords, nonharmonic tones, and cadence types. Sure there are many rules to learn, but you'll be a far more educated musician. Besides, it's so much fun to learn to break the rules in sophomore theory.
Theory III, the first semester of your sophomore year, is spent examining the possibilities of our system of Western harmony by analyzing works from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods in music history. By the end of the 19th century, our harmonic system was extremely expressive and rich with possibilities. Discovering these new harmonies as a student leads to richness and variety in your own compositions.
Yes, I said your own compositions. Writing your first original composition is something like jumping into the deep end of the pool for the first time - scary, but exhilarating. You will be very proud of your accomplishments as you compose first in one style, then another. You won't be asked to write anything long or involved, just to include some of the concepts you are studying. Everyone gets into it once they have started.
Theory IV will take you into the 20th century - a very interesting time in music history. We will explore how the composers in the first half of the century tried to throw off the old ways of harmonic practice and developed new systems of musical organization with varying degrees of success. We will look at elements of jazz and see what compositional techniques can transform music into a jazz style. You will learn the methods and terminology to analyze music that does not fit into our rules of traditional harmonic practice. And finally, you will learn to express your own personal style, firmly grounded in knowledge of tradition, but open to new ideas.
