Doane College (Fine Arts & Humanities)
Art Department
Doane College's Art Department offers courses which prepare students for careers in the visual arts and provide a general appreciation of cultural heritage. The art major has four emphases:
* the liberal arts emphasis, which is often combined with a major from another field
* the certification emphasis, which prepares students for public school certification
* the professional and graphic arts emphases, which prepares students for professional careers and/or graduate studies
Music Department
The Doane College choral department has released its first compact disc in several years. Titled "Doane Choir on Tour," the CD features several of Doane's choral organizations: Doane Choir, Doublewide, and the quartet Downpour.
The performances all took place in the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 academic years, mostly while the choir toured in the Midwest and California. Some were also recorded during on-campus performances and recording sessions.
Theatre Department
At Doane, we believe that great theatre programs must prepare and train students for careers in all contemporary and emerging entertainment forms -- including live theatre, film, television, video, themed entertainment, and more. Our students live in a world that is interactive, collaborative, and fueled by their passion for our art form -- one that encompasses the many forms of professional practice as well as the theoretical exploration of current and emerging entertainment forms.
Our faculty and staff are known for their artistic accomplishments, professional achievements, and their ability to serve as inspiring teachers and mentors. Our students are passionate about the theatre and its possibilities -- in both scholarship and performance; they are eager to experiment and take creative risks.
Facilities
Our department utilizes several theatre spaces according to the type of event being held, along with well-equipped classrooms and studio environments to enhance our students' learning experiences.
Whitcomb Lee Conservatory, originally constructed in 1906-07, this national landmark was renovated in 2003-04 and now houses the theatre department. Its state of the art lighting and sound equipment, and imitate performance venue make it an ideal location for the majority of the department's performances. As the winner of the 2005 AIA Nebraska Design Award for its restoration, the "CON" is one of the architectural jewels on campus.
Heckman Auditorium seats 500 audience members and is a proscenium-style stage. This performance space is located in the Communications Center.
Cassel Outdoor Theatre seats 1,000 people and is used for theatre events taking full advantage of Doane's gorgeous scenic campus.
