Design Program
Designers create, plan and develop the objects and environments we use and experience in our everyday lives. Design is everywhere. Whatever we wear, sit on, drive, watch or listen to and work with - including our tools, electronics, vehicles, toys, furniture, home or commercial environments - a designer has had a hand in its creation and development. And there is an ongoing demand for new design.
The Golden West College Design Certificate of Specialization was created to help prepare students with the fundamental artistic, digital and technical skills required for careers in design. Popular design careers include; interior design, transportation design, toy design, industrial design, fashion design, furniture design, graphic design, model making and computer aided design (CAD) just to name a few.
The course of study includes the fundamental artistry, technical and digital knowledge and skills that are typically found in all of the professional design fields. Emphasis is placed on design theory, ideation, universal design principles, 2D and 3D visualization, artistry and model making, CAD, perspective and rendering, rapid visualization techniques, rapid prototyping, career options in design, materials and technical processes and portfolio development.
Completion of this certificate prepares successful students for employment as entry level designers, design interns, model makers, technicians, CAD designers or free lance designers. The curriculum is transferable for those pursuing a baccalaureate design degree. Students who complete this certificate will have many opportunities to create excellent examples of artwork for dramatic presentations, participation in the semi - annual GWC Design Student Show and for their professional portfolio.
Drafting Program
The Drafting Department includes two areas: Basic Engineering Drafting and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) with advanced 3D CAD design. The Engineering drafting area consists of introductory drafting classes for students requiring transfer credits to the Cal State system or for entry level vocational skills required in the current job market and is offered for beginning drafting students with no prior experience. The student will come away with the ability to understand the basic principles of drafting. Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) with advanced 3D CAD design program includes computer related classes in drafting that start with preparation for inexperienced students and lead up to classes that will prepare students for jobs in advance computer modeling. The first class offers a complete familiarization of Auto CAD which begins with simple drawings. The advanced classes give the students the opportunity to become familiar with state-of- the-art parametric modeling using AutoCAD’s most current Inventor Professional Series programs.
Certificates of Achievements are available for Technical Drafting in a one-year program and a two-year program. We also offer a 3 semester certificate that is co-listed with the Architectural program that allows students to acquire additional experience of CAD. Entry level technical drafting skills can be obtained after one year. The two year program offers the student the ability to obtain employment in industries using 3D modeling. We have combined our original Drafting 100, Technical Drafting, with the new beginning CAD 101 class at the advice of our advisory committee. This will give us two classes that will take a student from the beginning of CAD to the advanced level of AutoCAD in one year. The second year of the program would be advanced activities using AutoCAD and Inventor Professional software.
Highlights:
* The Drafting program at Golden West was the first college in California to teach parametric modeling using Mechanical Desktop and Inventor software.
* We currently use a more advanced CAD software then Cal State University Long Beach and at Fullerton use.
* All of our classes transfer to the CSU system.
* Highly knowledgeable instructor and supportive advisory committee

Visual Arts Program
Visual Arts teaches both traditional art functions and digital art. Course offerings include drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, printmaking, digital art, graphic design, web design and photography. Our student population takes courses for a variety of reasons, including vocational preparation, continuing education and degree requirements. The program is active in community outreach through the local high schools and vocational advisory committees.
Highlights:
The Digital Arts program and facility are strong and offer vocational oriented certificates in a state-of-the-art computer lab. With a vital connection to industry via vocational advisory committees the course offerings are relevant and enable students to acquire entry-level positions. The Photography program is aggressively moving into the digital realm to meet the demand of the student population as well as industry needs. The combination of having both a Digital Arts program and a Fine Arts program has made the students multi skilled and has increased interest in both areas due to the students moving back and forth between the programs. The students soon become aware that there is more to making art on the computer then learning the software programs. This knowledge fuels their desire for continuing their art education at a four-year college.
