Welcome to the De Pree Art Center & Gallery, more commonly known as De Pree. It may be your home away from home for 4 years. The Art Department moved into
De Pree, a remodeled furniture factory, in 1982; so you're getting the advantages of a modern, well-equipped facility combined with the history of craftsmanship
found in an older building.
The Department of Art and Art History is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Course offerings in the Department of Art and Art History are structured in form, content and sequence to provide a foundation in the fine arts for both the art student and the liberal arts student. The curriculum affords opportunities for study and creative work in the visual arts through studio practice and art history. The Department of Art and Art History faculty members are teaching, producing and research oriented artists and art historians. The department offers assistantships to qualified upper level students. Students majoring in art at Hope College participate in a wide variety of activities:
• Apprenticeships Overseas, or in New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia
• Contacts with visiting artists and lecturers of national importance
• Field trips to museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Toledo Museum of Art.
• Exhibition experience in the De Pree Gallery
• Entrance in local juried competitions
• Varied contacts with other college art departments

Department of Art & Art History
Art and Art History students take courses to create art and art history courses in which they study the work of other artists. Hope has facilities for printmaking, photography, drawing, painting, ceramics, design, and metal sculpture. Hope graduates are professional artists, art history scholars, art educators, graphic and furniture designers and managers of art galleries.
What's so special about the Art Department?
* Hope is the only private liberal arts college in Michigan whose Art Department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Arts and Design (NASAD) because of its superior curriculum, facilities and faculty. The Art Department at Hope College has been accredited since 1974.
* Studying art within the context of a liberal arts education enables students to learn the technical side of art and to also explore a wide variety of ideas providing a firmer foundation from which to draw their subject matter.
* Hope's Art faculty are well represented in their fields, producing work that appears in national, regional and international exhibits and collections. Studio art professors have their own studio space so students can see their work in progress.
What can students do?
* Opportunities abound on campus; students can work in the gallery, the art office, the slide library and as assistants to their professors.
* Internships are available locally and through off-campus study in Chicago, Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington D.C.. Study abroad opportunities in London, Paris, Florence, and Greece to name a few.
* Gretchen Schmidt '05 designed the exhibition catalog for Going Dutch, a visiting exhibition.
* Exhibit work in the annual juried student show. Senior art majors have an exhibition of their work in the spring; a culmination of their studies at Hope.
* Visiting artists work directly with students through workshops, lectures, critiques and presentations.
* Take field trips to the Detroit Institute of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Frederick Meijer Gardens are some examples. There are many galleries in Grand Rapids, Holland and other neighboring lakeshore cities.
