Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art

The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, or Joe Kubert School, located in Dover, New Jersey, is a three-year technical school that teaches the principles of sequential art and the particular craft of the comics industry as well as commercial illustration, and also offers a major in film animation. Founded in 1976 by cartoonist Joe Kubert, it was and still is the only accredited school devoted entirely to cartooning. Its graduates include many successful and well-known comics pencilers and inkers. The school's instructors are full-time professionals working in the industry, many of them graduates of the school themselves, and the instruction is hands-on and practical. The school has a reputation for demanding and intensive coursework, and has a dropout rate averaging roughly 30%.

Over the past years since its formation, THE JOE KUBERT SCHOOL OF CARTOON AND GRAPHIC ART, INC., has continued to hone its focus, direction and curriculum in preparing our students for the professions towards which they have dedicated themselves. The objective of the school has not altered since its inception. We will continue to bring the finest professional practicioners to compose our faculty of instructors, all of whom give unstintingly of their time, understanding, and knowledge. They afford the aspiring cartoonists of tomorrow an unequalled source of experience, and provide them with a solid foundation upon which the students may build a satisfying career. Cartoon-Graphics© and Cinematic Animation also continue to grow, offering limit-less opportunities for those professionals properly prepared to take advantage of the various media to which the art of cartooning may be applied. It is the aim and purpose of this institution to add to the ranks of our profession those people whose work and attitude reflects the highest level of the art. Recognizing the goal, the application of a sustained effort makes the goal attainable.

ADMISSIONS

Applications for enrollment are accepted anytime during the year for the following school year. Since instruction is based on an individual student's own capabilities and potentials, upon receipt of the application, arrangements will be made for the interview procedure and submission of a portfolio. Individual classes are generally limited to a maximum of 25 students and applicants are urged to apply early. An applicant must be a high school graduate or have received a high school equivalency diploma for initial acceptance into The Joe Kubert School. An official high school transcript must be sent to the school prior to enrollment. Interviews (personal or telephone) are scheduled upon receipt of application and application fee. Interviews will not be scheduled until all of the preceding requirements are fulfilled. An applicant who resides a considerate distance from the school is accommodated with a telephone interview. In such instances, the school must receive the portfolio prior to the scheduled telephone interview. It is the responsibility of the applicant to place the call at the scheduled time of the interview. Requests for transcripts must be made by the applicants to their respective high schools and post secondary schools and colleges.

FACILITIES

The school is based in Dover, New Jersey, a forty-five minute trip by bus, train or automobile from New York City. Within minutes of lakes and farmland, the small town still maintains its warmth and hospitality. The building was originally utilized as the Dover High School. Three stories tall, it contains 100,000 square feet of space, including a gymnasium and auditorium reflecting it's art deco origin. A connecting parking area satisfies the need for student parking. Ample lighting, drawing tables, and taborets are available for each student. Easels, chairs, boards, display cabinets, life class facilities, VCR's, slide and movie projectors, and other visual aids and appliances are supplied as required. The use of computers in graphics, coloring, color separations and publishing is taught to and required of all students. Computers are supplied by the school. Animation boards and pegged discs are supplied to all animation students. In addition to a full-sized professional Oxberry stand and camera on the premises, state-of-the-art computer software enables students hands-on experience in their courses of study. Pencil Testing equipment, Claymaytion, Stop-Motion, and Rotoscoping are included in the courses. The maximum class size in all courses is 25.

Students

Due to the small size of the school, and the fact that students come from all over the world to study there, JKS has a very friendly and close community of students. There are usually no more than 150 students attending the school at any time, and most students know each other. Especially in first year, when nearly all the students live in the three official student houses (the Carriage House and Mansion, former site of the school at 45 Lehigh Street, Dover, NJ, and the Clinton House at 145 W. Clinton Street, Dover, NJ). The school itself holds a Halloween costume contest every year on the last Friday before Halloween, with prizes usually including gift certificates and comics.

Art Supply Store

The school also houses the Joe Kubert Art Store, which sells all the tools and supplies students will need for assignments, as well as many other products such as books and drafting tables. Most of the products are of the highest quality, with some products even imported from other countries. One such available product is the Kolinsky Raphael sable inking brush, which Joe Kubert discovered in an art store while vacationing in Paris and now has shipped from France to his store. While an expensive brush (around $20 apiece), it is one of the very best brushes for inking comic work and is known to last longer than inferior brands.
