Johnson State College

Who We Are

Johnson State College, one of five colleges in the Vermont State College system, sits on 350 hilltop acres in the heart of the Green Mountains. Our academic offerings span 25 bachelor's, three master's, three associate's, one certificate and 11 teacher licensure programs. Enrollment for the 2007-08 academic year numbered 1,934 students.

Johnson State first made its name in preparing public school teachers. In the mid-1800s, our students came from local farms and nearby villages to earn their college degrees. The same adventurous spirit distinguishes our students today, though they come here to study not only education but also a variety of other liberal arts subjects.

Johnson State's small size promotes close student-faculty relationships, creating many opportunities for you to travel, go to professional meetings and/or conduct research with your professors. Meanwhile, our belief in learning by doing encourages you to translate theory into practice in the lab, K-12 classroom, art studio and beyond.

Our commitment to student success is guided by the belief that higher education transforms lives. Whether you want to build on your existing skills or develop completely new ones, we help you to become what you dream.

When you graduate from Johnson State, you will leave with more than a degree. You will also possess the skills, knowledge and understanding that form the basis for career success, civic involvement and a lifelong love of learning.

Bachelor of Arts in Art/ Bachelor of Fine Arts
There are two degree tracks for students wishing to pursue a major in fine arts: the Bachelor of Arts in Art and the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art.
The B. A. in Art

This degree program provides you with a solid foundation of art instruction in a variety of disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, digital media and ceramics. You will also be exposed to critical and historical perspectives on art that will help you assess your own art. To this end, you will be required to participate in a monthly, department-wide critique.
The B.F.A. in Art

This degree requires a greater concentration in studio work. Admission to the program must be followed by a minimum of three semesters of studio work before the senior exhibition. A student is admitted into the program only upon recommendation by the studio arts faculty and approval by the chairperson, following a successful portfolio review. In addition, each candidate for the B.F.A. must present an exhibition and gallery talk in the Julian Scott Gallery during the final year of study. This exhibit is prepared under the guidance and supervision of the art faculty and you must demonstrate proficiency in a chosen area of concentration.

For the B.F.A., you must complete a total of 60 credits by fulfilling all the requirements for a B. A. in art (45 credits) plus 15 credits in advanced courses. The B.F.A. Senior Seminar prepares you for a professional career in the arts.

Bachelor of Arts in Music
Music majors receive in-depth experience in theory, composition, performance, music education and studio recording. Accepted majors audition during the first year as part of the B.A. in music. Majors have a variety of performance opportunities, recitals, ensembles, choir, band, applied lessons, musicals and a very active music club. Additionally, a variety of professional musicians across the musical spectrum, perform at the Dibden Center for the Arts each year

The music program offers the following concentrations:
Classical Studies
This program of study is designed for students who are already proficient in a classical instrument or voice and who are interested in advanced training in all areas of technique, musical theory, history and style. It is designed for students who are seriously interested in pursuing advanced degrees or careers in classical music performance, or in teaching music theory or history. Ensembles can include small string, wind and vocal chamber ensembles, Chamber Singers, choir and band. Graded juries are held each semester and a senior recital is required.

Minor in Dance/Licensure in Dance
As a dance student, you will study a variety of techniques and styles, including ballet, modern dance, jazz, historical dance and improvisation. Advanced students may become members of the college's dance company, the Johnson State Ensemble. Apprenticeships are available in one of the college's two resident companies, the Vermont Dance Collective and the Maris Wolff Solo Dance Repertory.

Bachelor of Arts in Theater
The theater curriculum at Johnson State College is comparable to that of other institutions of similar scale and resources. The overall emphasis, however, is unique to JSC. The program emphasizes a balance between liberal arts and pre-professional studies. The B.A. program is built on core courses in Literature, Voice and Theater Arts followed by course work in Shakespeare, Theater History and Advanced Dramatic Literature.

Production skills are also a major focus including: acting, directing, improvisation, children's theater, stage craft and dance. In addition, two senior capstone courses provide professional transitions into the theater world: Senior Project in Theater and Seminar in Professional Preparation for the Actor. The heart of the program's curriculum is the course credit students receive for each production they undertake as part of their four-year plan. These productions are the testing ground for work explored in the classroom where the collaborative nature of theatre is constantly reaffirmed.

The program is designed to serve students who aspire to become theater performers, teachers, theater technicians and managers or those who wish simply to gain a broader knowledge and understanding of themselves and the world around them as part of a strong liberal arts education. It also prepares students for graduate work.

Associate's Degree in Technical Theater
This career-oriented program includes course work in technical theater skills (stagecraft, lighting and design, music and audio engineering), studio and performing arts, and general management; an internship is required.

Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theater
The new B. A. in Musical Theater will link already existing programs in theater, music and dance, relying primarily on present resources in the Performing Arts Department and creating several new classes unique to the demands of singer/actor training, a market whose growth in the New England area has been quite sturdy in the past decade. The program will require 55 credits in theater and music, including up to three classes in dance and an internship. This degree brings theater, music and dance together in a collaboration designed to enhance the employment possibilities/potential of singer/actors and widen their career prospects as performers — training them to compete in the musical theater market.

Minors in Fine and Performing Arts
There are a number of fine and performing arts minors available to students.

Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts

The M.F.A. is a 60-credit graduate degree in studio art offered by Johnson State in conjunction with the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. Students in this low-residency program work with resident and visiting artists from both programs and typically finish their studies in three to four years.

Founded in 1984, the Vermont Studio Center is an ideal creative community embracing serious advanced artists of different ages, approaches, and levels of development. Sharing a commitment to the creative process, these artists come together at the Vermont Studio Center throughout the year to develop their work through distraction-free, intensive studio work in drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media.
