Kendall College of Art and Design
Kendall College of Art and Design, of Ferris State University is a college of the visual arts in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States. It offers both Bachelor's and Master's degrees (primarily of Fine Arts) in a variety of subjects.
Mission
We prepare our graduates to become leaders in the world of art and design by nurturing their creative spirit and fostering intellectual excellence. We seek to promote in our students an awareness of social responsibility, to provide a dynamic professional environment, to move the institution to national prominence, and to support the integrity of the school through resource development. We are committed to providing students with an education that prepares them to become working artists in art and design.
History
The school was founded in 1928 as David Wolcott Kendall Memorial School, through a bequest by his widow Helen M. Kendall. Mr. Kendall had been a nationally-recognized pioneer in the local furniture industry. The institution became known as Kendall School of Design in 1947, was accredited as Kendall College of Design in 1981, and became Kendall College of Art and Design in 1987 to reflect its programs in the Fine Arts. Previously a private college, it merged with Ferris State University in 2000, but retains a substantial degree of autonomy as a full college, with its own academic programs, facilities, faculty, staff, and president.
Facilities and Resources
Working Spaces for Working Artists
When you’re a visual artist, where you work truly matters. That’s why the Kendall campus is full of extraordinary places for artists to work and learn.
Our studios are lofty and open, bright and comfortable. Labs and workshops are well-resourced with the tools of both modern and traditional craft processes. And each program has its own home base of classrooms, workshops, studios, resource rooms, and exhibit spaces, with all the specialized technology and tools to support your studies.
Outside the classroom or studio, our students have lots of great spaces to gather, study, contemplate, or caffeinate. And all our facilities are conveniently housed in two large urban buildings that are right next door to each other. A three-story central atrium provides dramatic exhibition space and ideal gathering places for Kendall students and faculty.
"The Study"
The Baker Furniture Collection Study (commonly called "The Study") provides a central place for students to explore furniture and decorative arts from around the world — ancient, modern, and everything in between.
The Dow Center
The Dow Center provides a dynamic learning environment where students come together in collaborative, cross-disciplinary teams to design and produce their work using advanced technology.
The Library
The Kendall library houses a vast and easily accessible art and design collection — available in print and online.
The Bookstore
The Kendall Bookstore is located on the lower level of our main building and carries all required textbooks and course-related materials including art supplies. In addition, the bookstore stocks hundreds of non-required books, study aids, Kendall-imprinted clothing and gifts, greeting cards, posters, calculators, snacks, and office and personal supplies.
Students
As of Spring 2007 total enrollment (undergraduate and graduate) is about 1100 students, with a faculty:student ratio of about 1:14. Most students live in apartments downtown or in nearby neighborhoods such as Heritage Hill and Eastown. The college assists students in finding housing, and also offers renovated, furnished apartments a block from the main building. In the atrium of the building, students often partake in table-top sports such as ping pong and foosball.
