About CAS

Loyola University Chicagos' College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the ideal undergraduate setting for students to develop awareness of past and present dimensions of human culture, to seek truth, to confirm their dedication to others, and to strengthen their courage to build a future for the human family.

Since 1870, the College of Arts and Sciences has advanced the 450-year-old Jesuit tradition of rigorous academic study, firmly grounded in the liberal arts. CAS prepares students for meaningful careers with top academic programs in the arts and sciences and a focus on each student's development as a whole person. Located on Loyola's two main Chicago campuses, the college provides undergraduate students with many opportunities to engage the world and to get a head start on their future careers through volunteer positions and internships.

Academics
The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) offers undergraduate students the opportunity to earn the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in 57 majors, preparing them for meaningful careers in a variety of fields. The college also offers 16 distinctive dual-degree and five-year programs, allowing students to pair the bachelor's degree with graduate degrees in business, education, criminal justice, mathematics, social work, and more. Students in any major may choose to prepare for further professional study in one of the college's pre-professional programs or to gain distinction by earning academic honors.

THE MAJORS IN FINE ARTS

Studio Art
This major prepares students to enter a career directly after graduation or to pursue an advanced degree. Students gain a foundation in a variety of studio areas and art history; they then choose a particular medium such as drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics or jewelry. The studio program culminates in a senior exhibition held in the Crown Center Fine Arts Gallery.

Visual Communication
Students receive training in the elements of visual communication. One semester of internship in local advertising agencies or design studios complements academic study. VisCom students also produce a final body of new work for the senior exhibition, which represents the integration of their academic and professional experiences.

Art History
Students develop a general background in the history of art and also can concentrate in-depth in an area of their choosing. They complete their major by researching and writing a major paper on a topic of their choice. The program prepares students for admission to advanced degree programs.

Certificates
A certificate in graphic design is available and can be completed in day and evening courses.

THE MINORS IN FINE ARTS
Loyola Students are also offered the opportunity to minor in the following areas: Studio Art, Drawing and Painting, Ceramics, Photography, Visual Communication, and Art History.
