Michigan Technological University (Department of Visual and Performing Arts )
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts (previously Fine Arts) offers four exciting majors as well as several minors in art, music, and theatre.
Academics - Majors
Major in Audio Production and Technology, BS
A Bachelor of Science degree in Audio Production and Technology is an interdisciplinary program that integrates studies in music and theatre production with comprehensive coursework in engineering technology and computer science. Throughout the entertainment industry, current consumer expectations and technological advances are driving a need for audio production professionals who are educated not only in the fundamentals of music and theatre, but also in specific area of technology. Acoustics, electro-acoustics, electronics, computer applications, mechanical operations, and other disciplines are at the heart of modern audio production and this degree.
Major in Sound Design, BA
A Bachelor of Arts degree in Sound Design is an interdisciplinary program that integrates studies in music and theatre production with comprehensive coursework in engineering technology and computer science. Acoustics, electro-acoustics, electronics, computer applications, mechanical operations, and other disciplines are at the heart of modern audio production and this degree.
Major in Theatre and Entertainment Technology, BS
A Bachelor of Science degree in Theatre and Entertainment Technology is one that integrates studies in engineering technology with foundations in the arts. The Visual and Performing Arts Department will graduate well-educated professionals who blend solid technical expertise with innovation, artistry, and creativity. These graduates will be qualified to fill entry-level backstage positions in the entertainment industry in areas such as: theatrical production, multi-media concerts, theme parks, elaborate corporate events, sporting events, and their half-time extravaganzas.
Major in Theatre and Entertainment Technology, BA
A Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre and Entertainment Technology is an interdisciplinary program that integrates studies in theatre production and the liberal arts with comprehensive coursework in technology and computer science. Throughout the entertainment industry, current consumer expectations and technological advances are driving a need for theatre production professionals who are educated not only in the fundamentals of theatre, but also in specific areas of technology. Structures, mechanical operations, electronics, acoustics, electro-acoustics, pneumatics, computer applications, and other disciplines are at the heart of modern theatre production and this degree.
Academics - Minors
Minor in Technical Theatre
A minor in technical theatre will be an artistic and practical complement to engineering, computer science, or other technical degrees. The student will have a basic competency in stagecraft, stage electrics, and design for theatre. Practical experience crewing and designing for live productions reinforces theoretical course and lab work.
Minor in Theatre Arts
The student who completes the minor in theatre arts will have a basic competency in the art, principles, and techniques of theatre. The broad range of knowledge covers dramatic literature, performance, and design. Practical experience through live productions reinforces theoretical course work.
Minor in Music (General)
A minor in music adds breadth to the students’ university experience and provides the student with in-depth experiences and understanding in music. Through studies in theory, appreciation, history, and performance, students will develop their musical abilities and will receive a foundation for music as a serious avocation.
Students who complete a minor in general music will demonstrate a basic competency in music theory and history and a broad-based knowledge of various genres.
Minor in Music Technology
Students who complete a minor in music technology will gain a basic competency in music theory and history, and a facility with MIDI instruments, notation and sequencing software, and recording and sound reinforcement technology.
Minor in Jazz Idiom
Students who complete a minor in jazz idiom will develop competency in music theory, an awareness of the historical, social, and musical relevance of jazz, and will attain performance fluency in both jazz improvisation and jazz arranging.
Minor in Art
The study of art adds breadth to the student’s general university experience and depth to the student’s studies in science, technology and engineering through the honing of spatial skills and awareness. Students with a minor in art will have developed their creative and visual skills, will understand the elements and principles of design, will have an understanding of the history of civilization through their study of art, and will have the tools and incentives for life-long learning.
