Miles College
About Miles
Our noble Founders, who saw educated leadership as the paramount need in the Black Community, would be proud of how well their dream is being realized through academic and core-curricular offerings.
Miles College- a senior, liberal arts, church-related College with roots in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and in the tradition of the Historically Black College- motivates and directs its students to seek holistic development that leads to intellectual, ethical, spiritual, and service oriented lives. Guided by these core values, the Miles College education involves students in rigorous study of the liberal arts as preparation for work and life-long learning. Students are engaged in the acquisition of verbal, technological and cultural literacy and encouraged in critical community participation-all as a prelude to responsible citizenship in the global society which they will help to shape. Miles College is also a member of the United Negro College Fund.
Students and faculty involvement in academic activities, participation in the arts, spirited athletic programs and an enriching community life characterizes the Miles College environment. Miles offers 25 Bachelor Degree programs in six academic divisions to an enrollment of more than 1,700 students. In addition to its traditional full-time student class schedule, Miles offers evening and weekend courses for working students who wish to continue study toward degrees.
Division of Music & Music Education
Founded in 2003, the Miles College Music Program has quickly become one of the most popular on campus. The Music Program’s five full-time faculty hold degrees from nationally recognized music programs. They are complemented by a talented group of adjunct faculty who perform with and teach at the area’s most prestigious music organizations.
Students have ample opportunity to perform and study alongside the music faculty. Students work in labs, in chamber ensembles, and in small classes under the careful guidance of musician-teachers. Hands-on learning is at the heart of the Music Program’s approach to teaching the art of music.
Through the Music Program, Miles College offers both the Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Bachelor of Music Education degrees. Additionally, the Music Program offers a minor in music as well as courses in performance and literature for non-music majors.
Mission Statement
The activities of the Miles College music program reflect the College's unique philosophical, ethical and spiritual goals. The music program stresses critical judgment of music -- its social context, its meaning, and its merits. To these ends, the curricula for Miles College’s three music majors include perception-based and context courses in music history and literature, and music theory courses in which the structures of music are considered within historical and stylistic frameworks.
Recognizing that intellectual pursuits have a social dimension, the music program stresses music as a vehicle for service and outreach. Performance and music education courses provide opportunity for college and community service.
