Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design
The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) is an accredited college providing Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in the fields of Communication Design, Drawing, Illustration, Industrial Design, Integrated Fine Arts Studio, Interior Architecture + Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture and Time-Based Media. We prepare students with interest and ability in the visual arts for passage into professional careers. We’re not a trade school. We’re a college that launches professional artists and designers on their personal journeys toward artistic growth and successful, creative lives. We were founded as MIAD in 1974, but formed from the Layton School of Art & Design, which began instruction in 1920. There are, on average, about 600 full-time MIAD students and about 200 staff/faculty. The student/faculty ratio is 16:1. All faculty are working artists, designers, writers and researchers; there are also instructors who are working professionals.
Mission
The mission of the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) is to provide intensive, structured and sequential course content in the concepts and skills that are fundamental to the visual arts, and to develop students as artists/designers who have the ability to engage in an independent process of professional inquiry and vision. MIAD provides an education in the visual arts distinguished by its emphasis on assured competence in particular fields.
Accreditation
The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) is a private, non-profit corporation chartered by the State of Wisconsin for the purpose of providing a professional education to students of the visual arts and related fields. The college offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Communication Design, Drawing, Illustration, Industrial Design, Integrated Fine Arts Studio, Interior Architecture + Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture and Time-Based Media. MIAD is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD). The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (www.ncacihe.org or 312/263-0456). The BFA degree of MIAD is approved by the Wisconsin Educational Approval Board under Title 38, U.S. Code, for the training of veterans.
Campus
MIAD's five-building campus is located in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward; some twenty blocks of renovated warehouses, artists lofts, theaters, businesses, shops, and restaurants. A destination for both tourists and residents, the Third Ward possesses a distinct and unique urban flavor.
A mainstay in the Third Ward, MIAD has since become the catalyst for further growth in the area. Now at the center of this thriving arts community, the college benefits from the region's new-found prosperity while continuing to add to it.
Safe, public transportation stops near MIAD's campus, and within walking distance are the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Milwaukee Public Museum and Library. There are also various lakefront activities, and assorted festivals at the Summerfest grounds featuring music and entertainment from around the world. Within a block there's the Broadway Theater Center, with three resident companies. And just a few blocks away is the Marcus Center, featuring major pop and classic concerts as well as local touring performance groups. Throughout the city are scores of ethnic, fast food, and high cuisine restaurants, and the nearby Shops at Grand Avenue offers 160 diverse stores and shops.
