Moravian College
Art mediates between the real and the imagined. Manual skills, technical knowledge, and an aesthetic and critical sensibility require a self-directed and infinitely curious mind. The study of art at Moravian is grounded in a multidisciplinary understanding of how art reflects, reveals, and regenerates cultural, social, political and ethical issues. Students utilize a variety of traditional and digital media. Content from their course work in art history, the humanities, and sciences, provides a framework for development of their personal vision.
Facilities
Art students at Moravian College may utilize a wide variety of rooms and resources to aid in obtaining the best education possible. The facilities listed below are available to students during class and at most times when no other class is using the facility.
Studios
Ceramics Studio
Students in the Moravian College Ceramics Lab use stoneware and porcelain to create handbuilt and wheel-thrown pieces. Low-firing clays are also used for special projects. The lab is equipped with 8 electric potter's wheels, a kick wheel, and a slab roller. Firing is done in 2 bisque kilns, a gas kiln, and an electric kiln. An outdoor firing and work area is available for raku and salt-glaze. A wide variety of glazes are available at the glazing station; also, minerals are available for students to use to make glazes from scratch. The ceramics lab is available for student use at any time, day or night, when there are no classes.
Drawing Studio
The Drawing Studio is used for classes in Drawing, Color, and Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting. It is equipped with 19 drafting tables. Cabinets are available containing a wide variety of material for still-life use. There are also a number of casts of sculpture from the Metropolitan Museum of Art for drawing use. Life models are used in drawing classes; model stands and other equipment are available for models.
Painting Studio
Beginning and Intermediate painting and drawing classes are taught in the Painting Studio. Advanced Painting and Drawing classes meet in the Painting Studio for critiques and for special assignments such as working from the model; otherwise, advanced students work in their individual studios
(or out of doors for en plein air projects). The painting studio is equipped with all necessary easels and lighting equipment.
Printmaking Studio
Printmaking equipment, presses and UV light boxes are available for a number of printmaking techniques, including dry point, woodcut, linocut, collagraph, monoprint, solarplate and photo etching with solarplate. Access to papermaking facilities is also available. Printmaking is taught as a complete semester class as well as a half-unit class, Printmaking and Book Arts. Beginning printmaking is also included as part of Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting.
Sculpture Studio
The Sculpture Studio is used for all three-dimensional classes as well as classes in the Art Education track. A large, open work space with flat tables and sink facilities is provided for craft and sculpture projects. Tools are also available for woodworking, including a bandsaw and circular saw. A special area known as the "cage" contains acetylene tanks and other equipment for welding bronze. This area is available only with special permission of the professor teaching the sculpture classes.
Student Studios
Junior and Senior art majors with a minimum of two studio art courses per semester are given a studio. This space, shared with one or two other students, enables art students to have an area in which to work individually and to store supplies. Advanced painting and drawing classes are held in studios; the teacher comes to the student, rather than vice versa. The Art Club's Open Studio Night gives students an opportunity to display their best work in their studios for the entire college community. Prizes are awarded.
Labs
Graphics and New Media Labs
Moravian College has two state-of-the-art Macintosh computer labs
equipped for applications in graphic design and new media, including digital photography and video. Both have 15 Macintosh G5 computers and software including the latest versions of Indesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Other new media programs are also installed on each computer, such as Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, and FinalCut. A large font library is also available.
Also included in the labs are several flat-bed scanning stations. A slide scanner is located in the New Media Lab.
Black-and-white printers are available in both labs. The graphic design lab has an 11x17 color printer. A large-format printer, which can print upto 42 inches wide, is located in the New Media Lab. The
New Media Lab also has an Epson printer that can perform special processes, including printing on hand-made paper and other surfaces. The Epson printer is available for faculty and advanced students
by special request. Lab fees charged to students in graphic design/new media classes cover initial printing costs, and additional money can be deposited by students into color printing accounts, as needed.
Space is made available on the Moravian College network for students in classes using the labs; it is cleaned up on a regular basis. Students are asked to save their work to flash drives.
Both computer labs are open on a regular basis for student use when classes are not in session. Advanced graphic design students work as lab monitors, under the supervision of the South Campus Computer Lab Technician.
Photography Lab
Moravian College's Photography Lab is fully equipped for processing black and white and color photographs. The black-and-white darkroom contains 14 enlargers, and the advanced darkroom is equipped with the capability of printing color, mural prints, and non-silver processes. In addition to traditional photographic processes and techniques, advanced students have the option of pursuing alternative approaches such as hand-built cameras, chemical print-altering techniques, and photo silkscreen. All equipment and chemistry required for fine printing and archival processing are available. Lectures, critiques and presentations take place in the large, well-appointed classroom facility. Adjacent to the Photography Lab / Classroom is the studio, which provides students with access to large and medium-format camera equipment, quartz lights, studio strobes, tripods
and backdrops. Also available is a video monitor / VCR and an extensive selection of books and publications on the medium of photography.
The Photography Lab is staffed by experienced photo lab monitors on days when classes are not scheduled and is accessible to students on selected mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends. Monitors are fully capable of preparing chemistry, maintaining the lab, and assisting students. A schedule of lab hours is posted outside the Photography Lab.
