Norfolk State University (Fine Arts Department)

Located on the campus of Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Virginia; the Fine Arts Department offers a program rich in core art courses and electives, allowing students to concentrate on their own area of interest. The department has one of the finest computer imaging labs in the country and houses excellent studios for traditional media including print-making, painting, drawing and fashion design.


About Fine Arts Department
Norfolk State University is located in the center of the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, an area rich in cultural resources. The Chrysler Museum of Art at Norfolk is one of the country's finest art museums with a comprhensive historical collection of work from around the world. Norfolk is home to the Virginia Opera, a regional opera company with an international reputation for staging new operas; the Virginia Symphony, under the direction of Joanne Faletta; and the Virginia Stage Company, one of only three professional Actor's Equity theatres in the state. The area also includes three important regional art centers affiliated with the Virgina Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond: the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts in Virginia Beach, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News, and the Portmouth Museums. Besides these institutions a number of other arts organizations thrive here including the Southeastern Virginia Arts Association, the Tidewater Artist's Association, the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society, the Tidewater Performing Arts Society, the Norfolk Chamber Consort, and the Tidewater Ballet.


Scholarships

Eighty-five percent of all students at Norfolk State University receive financial aid through non-need scholarships, need-based scholarships, low-interest loans and long-term loans, College Work-Study awards, and part-time jobs.

To be eligible for financial aid, a student must be in good standing, that is, permitted to enroll at Norfolk State University or successfully progressing toward completion of a degree program. Applicants must file the (FAFSA) Free Application and the Institutional Financial Application.


Graduate Program
Master of Arts in Visual Studies
The Master of Arts degree in Visual Studies is offered jointly by Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University. This is a 33 credit hour program. The time limit for completing the degree is four calendar six (4) years. Norfolk State University is the institution of record to which all requests and materials should be sent. Applicants must complete the Portfolio Review Application included in this packet. Applicants are accepted for fall admission only.

Master of Fine Arts in Visual Studies
The Master of Fine Arts degree in Visual Studies is offered jointly by Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University. This is a 60 credit hour program. Applicants must complete the Portfolio Review Application included in this packet. Norfolk State University is the institution of record to which all requests and materials should be sent. Applicants are accepted for fall admission only.
