Art understands. Artists are insightful, expressive, open and accepting of other people, cultures and ideas. They can be some of the best at embracing home and exploring other communities. For artists who are Christians, art can be a response to the world as it is—and it can transform the world into something better. The artist responds and changes—and so does the person who views the artist’s work.

Studying art at Northwestern will give you an idea of who you are and how your artistic talent can engage the world around you. You will learn in the studio and out—because an artist needs more than pencils and paper. Your greatest artistic tool is your mind. You don’t want to be just an expressive, thoughtful artist. You want to be an expressive, thoughtful person.


Pre-graphic design

Students who want to apply art to advertising, business, communications, design, journalism, marketing, public relations or other careers can add a pre-graphic design emphasis to their art major. Not only will studying graphic design at Northwestern give you the skills for your first job, but our liberal arts curriculum will instill the wisdom—about art and other disciplines—you’ll need for the career-climbing opportunities that are sure to follow. Students with the pre-graphic design emphasis are also well prepared for graduate programs in design.


Pre-professional studio

Art majors planning for careers as professional artists, gallery directors, or college- or university-level art professors can add a pre-professional studio emphasis to their art major. The pre-professional studio program is designed to give students more portfolio-building art experience in a wide variety of mediums as preparation for a Master of Arts or Master of Fine Arts graduate program.
