Performing Arts Department

Dance Program
The Dance Program is one of the three areas of the Performing Arts Department. The Dance Program offers training in the foundations and principles of ballet, tap and jazz. Classes are offered as community service classes as well, where students can begin learning at a very early age in our pre-school program taught by Stevee Simmons.

Director of Dance, Pauline Smith, produces two recitals annually. These productions are fully staged with scenery, lighting and elaborate costumes in the Lily Peter Auditorium.

Helena Little Theatre
Helena Little Theatre was organized in 1934 by a group of people who wished to offer live entertainment to the Helena and West Helena community and, at the same time, give themselves an outlet for their creative energies. The group has remained active for well over half a century, except for two brief periods in the late 1940s and early 1960s.

In the early days only dramas, comedies, and mysteries were produced. That all changed, however, in 1968 when HLT produced its first musical, Kiss Me Kate, directed by Dr. Jean Knowlton. In 1973, My Fair Lady, directed by Eloise Kalb, was the first co-production of a musical by HLT and Phillips Community College. It was also the first such production staged in the new Lily Peter Auditorium. Since 1973, HLT and PCC/UA have collaborated on numerous musicals and many dramas and comedies, including Annie, The Wizard of Oz, The King and I, South Pacific, Crimes of the Heart, Steel Magnolias, Greater Tuna, and The Foreigner.

Blending the resources and talent of HLT and PCC/UA offers a perfect combination that will guarantee continued entertaining live theatre for Phillips County and surrounding areas in seasons to come.

Workshop in the Arts
Workshop in the Arts is a popular summer program for students going into the 3rd grade through the 12th grade, which offers classes in acting, singing, dance and the visual arts.

Workshop in the Arts gives young people an introduction to the world of theatre, on stage and behind-the-scenes. This program is designed to provide each individual an opportunity to expand his or her unique talents, build self-esteem and encourage collaboration with other members of the Workshop in the Arts Family.

As a conclusion to the Workshop each year, participants showcase their talents in front of an enthusiastic audience on the stage of the Lily Peter Auditorium.
