Pratt Fine Arts Center

Pratt Fine Arts Center is a nonprofit arts education and resource center located in Seattle. Pratt offers art classes for every age and every level of ability in four fully-equipped art studios: glass; sculpture; drawing, painting and printmaking; and jewelry/metalsmithing. Each year, more than 3,200 students and 500 working artists are served by Pratt Fine Arts Center’s studios and education programs.

Pratt includes facilities for glassblowing, lampworking, glass beadmaking, flameworked glass, metal sculpture, bronze casting, stonecarving, jewelry and metalsmithing, woodworking, printmaking, painting and drawing. The Center has three buildings: the main building in Pratt Park (also named after Edwin Pratt) and two additional buildings in the block immediately south of the park. The latter two were originally part of the adjacent, now empty Wonder Bread bakery.

Programs include adult and youth education (including free Saturday programs for youth), master artist intensives and visiting artist programs, and studio access programs for working artists.

Mission:
Pratt is an arts education and resource center dedicated to promoting creative development and artistic engagement to the local and global community.

Pratt's Studio Access Program
Provides artists with the time, space and tools they need to make art.

PRINTMAKING, PAPER AND BOOK ARTS
Pratt's printmaking studio includes two intaglio presses, a lithograph press, letterpress and photo exposing unit, more than 40 feet of glass-topped counter space, and a spacious work area with several large tables. The studio is completely equipped with an aquatint box, rollers, dry racks, flat files, a paper-soaking sink, a step shear, and ventilation hood.

JEWELRY AND METALSMITHING
Pratt maintains a fully-equipped jewelry/metals studio, with fifteen bench spaces, four soldering stations, a hydraulic press, a step shear, a rolling mill and much more, including a buffing and finishing room. The separate hollow-ware studio houses a collection of over 85 specialty hammers and stakes, as well as kilns for enameling and casting.

SCULPTURE
Pratt’s sculpture studio offers space and equipment for welding/fabrication, forging, stonecarving, and foundry work. Welding equipment includes MIG, TIG, arc, oxy-acetylene set ups and a plasma arc cutter. The foundry program features a 300 lb. natural gas metal furnace and a small 50 pound furnace. A stone sculpture program is housed in an outdoor work area, and includes access to air-powered and hand tools. Pratt’s forging studio offers anvils, hand tools, a large gas forge and an array of vises and jigs.

HOT SHOP
The hot shop accommodates blowing and casting. Equipment includes a 1,000 pound glass furnace, three glory holes, six annealing ovens, three high volum bench torches, two oxygen/propane torches, and an excellent selection of hand tools and pipes.

COLD SHOP
Pratt's cold shop is eqipped with 2 flattening wheels, a diamond saw, belt sander, Merker cutting lathe, pre-polished resin and cerium station, hand lapping availability - in short - everything necessary to fully finish glass pieces.

WARM GLASS
The warm glass studio includes eight lampworking stations, a fusing kiln, a pate de verre kiln, and two hex kilns. The large covered working tables double as light tables for stained glass work.

ELIGIBILITY AND POLICIES
Artists wishing to participate in the Studio Artists Program must demonstrate basic competency in the equipment or studio for which they are seeking access, and must be familiar with safety procedures, clean-up requirements, etc. New users should drop by or call Pratt's front desk to schedule an appointment with the Studio Coordinator for their area.

After learning about the studio and its requirements, an artist may request an Access Card Test. On successful completion of this test, the Coordinator will provide the artist with an Access Card which lists all the equipment on which the artist was tested.
