Rhode Island College (Art Department)
The Department of Art provides a dynamic environment for learning. Students and faculty maintain high standards in a competitive yet supportive community. Our program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (Outside LinkNASAD) and by the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC).
Foundations Concept
It is the belief of this faculty that a strong foundations program is essential to the understanding of basic concepts that students will need in their study of art. Students begin by completing a comprehensive series of foundations courses in drawing and design. In-depth research of basic drawing, two-dimensional and three-dimensional concepts offer student the foundation they will need for high level art courses.
Foundations In Art
Students seeking a B.A. or B.F.A. in Studio Art complete the Foundations Program in their first four semesters. The Foundations Program consists of six courses in drawing, two dimensional design, and three-dimensional design.
B.S. candidates majoring in Art Education are required to complete five of the six courses, however it is recommended that future Art Educators complete the entire Foundations Program in a four semester sequence.
B.A. candidates majoring in Art History select two courses from ART 101, 104 or 105.
Transfer Students
Students may not enroll in courses beyond ART 101 AND ART 104 unless they have fulfilled all prerequisite requirements via a Portfolio Review, or by enrolling in and successfully completing the required course(s) at Rhode Island College.
Grades And Studio Concentration Courses
Students must earn a minimum grade of C in the Foundations Program courses in order to be eligible for studio concentration courses. Students are encouraged to enroll in an entry-level studio concentration course (STUDIO I ONLY) while in each of the last two foundations courses (ART 204 and 205), providing they have earned a minimum grade of C in the first four foundations courses. This allows students to explore possible choices for their major concentration. NOTE: Art Education students must earn a minimum grade of B- in their Foundations Courses.
Woodshop Lab
While enrolled in the first Synthesis course (ART 204 OR ART 205) students must participate in a Woodshop Lab. This experience will familiarize students with tools, techniques and safety precautions necessary for working with power tools and other specialized equipment. The Woodshop Lab typically meets on Fridays. Individuals may choose between a morning or afternoon session. For more information contact the Main Office or an Art Faculty Advisor.
Portfolio
Students should save work completed in their Foundations Courses to begin creating a well organized and professionally maintained portfolio. This portfolio will be necessary should the student participate in the Annual Talent Award Competition, apply for the B.F.A. Program or transfer to another College or University.
Upon completion of the Foundations Program students select an area of concentration and fill out a plan of study with an Art Faculty Advisor.
Art Programs
Admission and Retention Requirements for B.A. in Studio Art
At the point when a student has completed foundation requirements and is ready to declare a studio concentration, the student shall apply for the concentration by establishing a plan of study with an appropriate advisor. The advisor and student will review the student's grades in the art program. A minimum grade of C in each of the foundation courses is required to qualify for entry into a studio concentration. Students who have transferred to Rhode Island College may request program credit for art courses taken at another institution by submitting a portfolio of work representing the courses for which program credit is desired. The portfolio will be reviewed by a committee of studio art faculty to determine course credit transfer. If a student receives a grade of C or less in any course in the concentration, he or she may not continue in that concentration.
Admission and Retention Requirements for B.F.A.
Students in the B.A. program are eligible to apply for B.F.A. candidacy after completing the foundation courses and one introductory-level concentration course. For admission into the B.F.A. program, applicants are required to have a minimum grade point average of 2.50 in foundation courses, with no less than a grade of C in any of those courses, and a minimum grade of B in the entry-level major studio concentration. Applicants are also required to have a successful portfolio review.
Applications for B.F.A. candidacy are reviewed in April for fall admission and in November for spring admission. The specific due date for applications and portfolios is posted outside the department office early each semester. Transfer students may apply after admission to the College and after completion of all foundation courses. Prospective students should request a copy of the Art Student Handbook from the Department of Art for complete details. Upon admission to B.F.A. candidacy, the student must develop a complete plan of study approved by the advisor and the department chair. A student may choose a faculty advisor in the elected studio area, who will review the student's grades in the art program. A minimum grade of B is required in all major studio concentration courses for retention in the B.F.A. program.
All General Education requirements must be completed by the end of the junior year. The senior year will be devoted exclusively to studio work.
