Art and design / art history
The Program in Art, Design and Art History provides an understanding of art as a humanistic discipline developing formal and conceptual skills that helps lead students to careers in the Arts. Students may specialize in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Digital Arts or Art History, Theses concentrations consist of sixteen courses earning 48 credits: a required group of foundation courses, an area of emphasis, and a senior thesis. The emphasis is worked out in consultation with an adviser, and is intended to provide development of ideas and skills in a particular area. During the senior year, students in Fine Art, Digital Art and Graphic Design create a series of projects that are shown in a Senior exhibition at the Campus Gallery. This exhibition helps form a portfolio for job placement and/or admission to graduate school.

Theatre arts/televsion and media arts
The major in theatre arts/television and media arts affords an opportunity to concentrate in one of two directions: theatre or television. theatre provides fundamental experiences in performance, production, and/or arts management necessary for professional goals. Television has similar preprofessional goals that focus on either the news and documentary fields or television drama.

Music
The undergraduate music program offers courses and performance opportunities for all Rutgers students, in all types of music. Many students choose to major, double-major or minor in music. Our faculty includes internationally recognized artists and scholars in jazz and classical music. Courses include music appreciation (touching on all types of music), fundamentals (how to read and write music), the history of classical music, Beethoven, Bach, jazz appreciation, rock, music from other cultures, women in music, and others. Any Rutgers student may earn course credit by singing in the chorus, playing in the jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, or chamber music ensemble, and by taking private lessons. Private lessons are available on voice and on virtually every instrument, for classical music and for jazz. Students may take advantage of the exceptional music resources at Rutgers-Newark. In Bradley Hall we are working on equipping a music laboratory with synthesizers and software for composition, notation, or the basics of music. The equipment may be used by students interested in advanced projects. Bradley Hall is also equipped with practice rooms and pianos, an organ, a recital hall, and a collection of instruments which students may use in the building during ensembles.

Journalism/media studies
Students in the Journalism and Media Studies Program explore the Metropolitan area from Newark and North Jersey to New York City. The subjects of their stories, documentaries and photo essays range from gospel music to Ramadan to the local face of a presidential campaign. We welcome all students with a passion for telling the true stories of our time.

Student work is published in the Newark Metro-a Web magazine devoted to report, essays, poetries, short stories and photography on the metropolitan area by Rutgers-Newark students. We also welcome contributors who live in, work in, or care about Newark and our region.

We teach journalism as part of a liberal arts education that blends theory and practices. Our courses explore subjects such as the history of journalism, contemporary media, television, and journalism ethics.
