Art Major/ Minor Program

The Art Major Program is a four year B.A. curriculum that provides experience in the visual arts with an emphasis on studio production. It consists of art foundation courses and areas of concentration. Students also select a minor area of study from outside the Department. This broadens their education in the humanities, sciences, or social sciences. Of the 127 credits required for graduation, 54 credits are within the Art Major. This provides ample preparation for either continued education at the graduate level or a career in an art or art-related field. The Art Department at Salem State College is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Art Education
Salem State College has received outstanding evaluations and commendations form the Massachusetts Department of Education for the quality of its Art Education Programs and for the commitment and qualifications of the faculty. This program qualifies students for teaching careers in grades pre-kindergarden through twelve. Teaching track courses include Color and Design; Basic Drawing; Figure Drawing; Form and Design; Crafts; Introduction to Electronic Media; Sculpture; and three additional studio elective courses. Teacher preparation courses include Introduction to Teaching Art; Preparation to Teach Art (Pre-K-9) and (5-12); Teaching Art as a Special Subject; and Teaching Art in the Middle and High Schools. The Student Teaching Practicum (working on site with a certified teacher of art in a local school system) is the culmination of each of the two Art Education Concentrations.

Art History
The Art History Concentration provides an opportunity to acquire a broad background in Western and Non-Western art. It prepares the student for graduate study leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Upon completion of graduate study, career opportunities in museum work, art restoration, teaching and research are available. Courses in the concentration include Prehistoric, Ancient & Medieval Art; Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo Art; Arts in America; 19th and 20th Century Art; Far Eastern Art; African, Native American and Oceanic Art; Topics in Contemporary Art; History of Photography; History of Graphic Design; Women, Art and Ideology; and Topics in Renaissance Art.

Graphic Design
The concentration in Graphic Design prepares the student for a future in commercial art and advertising design, and is committed to the development of both creative thinking and technical proficiency in the field. Courses in Graphic Design include Introduction to Electronic Media; Typography; Electronic Illustration; Electronic Imaging; Graphic Design Theory and Application; Graphic Design Portfolio; Illustration; Lettering and Calligraphy; and Electronic Publication Design. Facilities include design and production studios, two state of the art Macintosh computer labs with color printers, desktop scanners, and the latest design and illustration software.

Interactive Multimedia
The Interactive multimedia concentration prepares the Art major for a career in interactive multimedia design and is committed to the development of both creative thinking and technical proficiency in the field. Courses in Interactive Multimedia include Introduction to Electronic Media; Typography; Electronic Illustration; Electronic Imaging; Web Design; Advanced Web Design; Video and Animation; and Multimedia Design. Facilities include design and production studios, two state of the art Macintosh computer labs with color printers, desktop scanners, and the latest design and multimedia software.

Photography
The concentration in Photography focuses on photographic techniques, darkroom skills, and sound design principles, thereby preparing students for a creative photographic career or a career in commercial photography. Courses in Photography include Photography I; Photography II; Commercial Photography; Portrait Photography; Color Photography; Digital Studio Photography; Large Format Photography; and Advanced Commercial Photography. Facilities include a black and white darkroom, five color darkrooms, and a professional studio for portrait , large format, digital , and commercial photography.

Studio Arts
The Painting Concentration provides an in depth experience in painting as a medium for creative expression. Upon graduation, the student may either establish a studio or continue to study at the graduate level. Courses in the concentration include Representational Painting; Watercolor Painting; Landscape Painting; Non Representational Painting; Mixed Media Painting, and Topics in Contemporary Art.

The Printmaking Concentration provides an in depth experience in Fine Art printmaking. Upon graduation, the student may either establish a studio or continue to study at the graduate level. Courses in the concentration include Screenprinting; Intaglio; Lithography; Relief; Monoprinting; and Topics in Contemporary Art.

The 3-D Studio Concentration provides an in depth experience in specific three dimensional areas and prepares the student for graduate study. Courses include Ceramic Handbuilding; Jewelry; Sculpture I; Sculpture II; Ceramics; Wheelthrowing; and Topics in Contemporary Art.


Facilities

The Art Department at Salem State has undergone major space transformations recently resulting in expanded and new facilities. More than $400,000 has been expended for improving the Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, and Graphic Design areas (two state-of-the-art Mac Labs were installed this year). This keeps the Art Program current with professional art practices.
