Salve Regina University (Department of Art)

The Salve Regina Department of Art offers a unique opportunity to study the visual arts within the context of a strong liberal arts education. We are one of a select group of accredited members of the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD) who devote themselves exclusively to a BA curriculum with a major in Studio Art or Art History with concentrations in ceramics, graphic design, photography, painting & drawing. We also offer an interdisciplinary major in Interactive Communication Technology that stresses the use of technology in an increasingly visual world.

Our students pursue internships in regional museums and galleries; ad agencies and studios as a practical opportunity to enhance their educational experience. The art faculty is a very dedicated group of teaching artists who lead by their example in the classroom, as well as their careers as productive art professionals.


OVERVIEW

An accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, Salve Regina's art department promotes smaller classes that foster intimate dialogue between students and faculty. The curriculum stresses knowledge of art and culture, understanding of visual elements and their many complex interactions, and a sound technical background from which creative responses may be elicited.

Studio courses develop the intellectual and physical skills necessary to solve complex visual problems. Courses for non-majors provide an opportunity for students to understand their cultural heritage by becoming aware of how and why people have made art. Students are exposed to various artists, different historical periods, and the many complex interactions of art and society.


University Gallery

The University Gallery is an integral part of the greater Newport cultural community. The exhibition program features the work of many outstanding artists from the region, the country, and the world. Annual
student exhibitions, as well as the Senior Thesis Exhibitions, give students an opportunity to present their work in a professional forum. The Art Department's Visiting Artist program also gives students access to professional artists from a variety of disciplines.
