Santa Fe Community College-Northwest Campus (Fine Arts Department)
Forty years in the making, with the enthusiastic support of a community-wide audience, the Fine Arts Department at Santa Fe Community College continues to build its programs regionally, nationally and internationally. Through the diverse curriculum and close professional connections of the faculty with international artists in all discipline areas, Santa Fe is a cultural networking center for the arts. Santa Fe students can be seen year-round in professional-level public performances and exhibitions for which they have been groomed and carefully guided by the talented Dance, Music, Theater and Visual Arts faculty.
Santa Fe faculty members are both professionally and academically trained. They give their students challenging and inspiring instruction that creates tomorrow's notable performers, artists and leaders in future fine arts communities. Helping students realize their potential for success supports the Santa Fe mission of "adding value to the lives of our students and enriching our community."
Students at Santa Fe have access to the best instruction, with the opportunity to perform and exhibit publicly in any of the more than 40 collective annual public performances in Dance, Music, Theater or Art Gallery openings. They also have access to the highly competitive and well developed Santa Fe Fine Arts Scholarship Program. Twenty full scholarships fund tuition, books and supplies for aspiring artists each year. No other Florida college boasts this level of financial support for Fine Arts Department students.
Dance
Diversity is the hallmark of the Santa Fe Community College Dance Program. The Dance Program is 350 dancers strong with more than 50 Dance majors. Through this highly recognized program, dancers can receive an associate of arts degree with a Dance emphasis to transfer to an upper division program or work professionally in the field of dance performance, dance instruction, or choreography.
Santa Fe is on the cutting edge of dance training through work with a distinguished faculty that includes Alberto Alonso, co-founder of the National Ballet of Cuba, and other professionals. Dancers train in a variety of techniques including Ballet, Modern, Jazz, African, Salsa, Contact Improvisation, and Composition. The Dance Program offers opportunities to study with guest artists-in-residence and take master classes with such artists as Brian Brooks of Donald Byrd Contemporary Dance Company, Denise Vale of the Martha Graham Company, Finis Jhung and many others.
Music
The Music Program at Santa Fe Community College supports many performance opportunities in both college-based and community-based groups. Applied music classes in brass, piano, voice, woodwinds and percussion give students a strong foundation in their specific areas of interest. Core classes include Music Fundamentals, Music Theory, Theory Skills, Class Piano, Music Appreciation, Introduction to World Music, American Popular Music, and Hand Drumming.
Santa Fe performance groups include the Santa Fe Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Combo. The Santa Fe Singers are often asked to perform at venues around the state including Walt Disney World/Epcot's "Candlelight Processional," popular community holiday lighting displays, and the Gainesville Community Band's "A Bright Christmas." The Madrigal Singers perform with the Renaissance Ensemble, at a Christmas Concert, and at special holiday events in the community. Swing Shift provides students in the Theater and Music Programs the chance to study and perform in a variety of styles and formats. Santa Fe also has a Woodwind Ensemble and a Hand Drumming Ensemble that explores, studies and performs African and Caribbean music.
Theatre
Santa Fe Community College's Theater Program, boasting over 50 majors, encourages development of and participation in the theater arts. It raises awareness of how important the creative process is for students and the community. Theatre Santa Fe is the program's performing arm. Over a two-year cycle, its productions represent a wide range of genres including mixed media and acting for other media. It receives high ratings from the Florida Community College Activities Association Theatre Division and the American College Theater Festival. Theatre Santa Fe also supports many local community service organizations such as Trees of Life and St. Francis House.
The Theater Program's accredited faculty represent outstanding leadership and professionalism at college, community and state levels. It is dedicated to preparing students for transfer to state upper division colleges and universities. The program's faculty care about the future of developing student artists, giving them opportunities to explore their creative process in a nurturing learning environment.
Visual Arts
Santa Fe Community College's Visual Arts Program has a faculty of professional, practicing artists who provide instruction and advisement for more than 225 Visual Arts majors. These students are readied to continue their studies successfully both within the state university system as well as at institutions nationwide.
The Visual Arts Program includes eight studios for instruction in the foundations of two-dimensional and three-dimensional design and offers seven studio disciplines: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Jewelry and Photography.
Together with offerings in both Art History and a variety of electives within each studio discipline, the Visual Arts Program provides the necessary foundation for students preparing for transfer into competitive-entry upper division Visual Arts studies. While preparing a large contingent of Visual Arts majors, the program also serves students at large through its popular General Education course offering, Art Fundamentals.
