Seton Hall University (Department of Art and Music)
Our Mission
The Department of Art and Music offers major programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and the Master of Arts degrees. Our undergraduate offering includes programs in fine arts, graphic design, art history and music performance history. Together with the College of Education and Human Services, we also present programs in art and music education leading to New Jersey Teacher Certification. On the graduate level, we grant a Master of Arts degree in museum professions. Undergraduate majors can take advantage of the dual degree program in museum professions, which allows them to obtain a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years.
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS
Art History
Seton Hall offers a dynamic undergraduate major in art history. The international faculty offers a wide variety of courses, and students profit greatly from the University’s proximity to the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area museums. Qualified junior undergraduates have the option to enroll in a five-year dual degree program in museum studies. It allows students to take four graduate classes (one per semester during junior and senior years) that count towards the undergraduate and graduate degree. Students can complete their M.A. degree in one year plus two summer sessions.
Art Education
Secondary education majors in the College of Education and Human Services can apply for a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education in order to teach art in grades K-12. Elementary education majors who select art as their discipline may become eligible in art (grades K-12). This is done in conjunction with the Art Education advisor.
Fine Art
The Fine Arts area has a two-fold mission, to teach fine art as a component of a liberal arts education and to offer majors a deeper knowledge of their discipline while providing a foundation for future study. Studio art courses present an introduction to the fine arts where students develop a personal approach to art media, gain knowledge of materials and techniques and strengthen their creative skills. Course offerings include drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and figure drawing.
Graphic Design
The graphic design and advertising art majors combine courses in graphic design, advertising art, typography, fine arts and computer graphics. This visual communications concentration prepares students for the ever-expanding careers in advertising and media. Both electronic print and Web publishing are stressed in the development of creative projects. Internships are intended to familiarize students with the industry, which is an important component of this program. The major provides help in obtaining positions and placement in the field after graduation.
Music
Music majors are offered an exciting choice of courses in music history, theory and performance (voice and instrumental). Small classes and private lessons for majors and minors guarantee individual attention from a highly qualified teaching staff. Students are exposed to professional concerts both on campus and offsite. Music performance majors have several opportunities to perform in prestigious settings by participating in the department’s numerous ensembles.
