The Department of Art provides an opportunity for you to develop the creative dimension of your life in preparation for careers, leadership and service.

Department Goals
The goals of the Department of Art are to prepare students:

* to develop competencies in the visual arts by implementing design elements and principles using a variety of media.
* to participate in dialogue and research regarding diverse cultures and ethnicities, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics in order to creatively interpret and express ideas reflective of the global society.
* to demonstrate professional preparation by developing foundational knowledge, skills, and dispositions for application in the fine arts, teacher education, or computer graphics.
* to use critical thinking in synthesizing the knowledge and skills gained through a liberal arts education fostering a commitment to Christian values, service, and leadership.

Art Program Information

Program Goals
* Studio Art Degree provides an opportunity for students to develop their creative potential and prepares students for professionalism in the fine arts. Emphasis areas are available in Communication Graphics, Art Administration, and Art Therapy.
* Art Education Degree assists the students in developing the advocacy for the arts and for the meaning of the creative process as future teachers and provides the professional training needed to be an art educator.
* Licensure Program prepares art education students to receive a teaching license for Early Childhood through Adolescence (birth through age 21).

Program Entrance, Residency, Midway, and Exit Requirements
* All art majors/minors and transfer students will have their initial art course work assessed by the professor/s. A 2.3 GPA in the initial 6 foundation/core credits taken at Silver Lake College should be maintained. If there is a question of a student's performance in art, the department will communicate with the student its concern and present options. Ultimately, it will be the student's choice to decide whether to continue in the program. Early requirements for Art Education students and degree students seeking licensure are a GPA 2.50, passing grades on Praxis I reading, writing and math exams, Orientation to Teacher Education, background verification, interview, approval by Teacher Education Committee.
* To graduate from Silver Lake College in an Art Degree program, a minimum of 30 credits from Silver Lake College is required.
* Midway through a program, sophomores will exhibit works that have been previously juried by the art faculty. This will allow for assessment of student progress and feedback for the student.
* A senior exhibit is required of all majors in a 4-year program. An art professional, outside of the college, juries student work. Along with the senior exhibit, the student is required to do a senior synthesis (CLA 400) that is assessed by a panel of three faculty members, one of whom must be the student's advisor. Art Education students seeking art licensure and students with degrees seeking art licensure are required to successfully complete course requirements, clinical experiences, have a GPA 2.75, pass Praxis II content exam in art, interview, have the approval of the Teacher Education Committee, and successfully complete student teaching. A GPA of at least 2.75 is required for those students seeking to enter a graduate program in Art Therapy upon completion of a studio art degree.

Studio Art
Silver Lake College offers a wide variety of studio courses and an opportunity for students to develop the creative dimension of their lives in preparation for leadership and service. A degree in Studio Art prepares the student to pursue a career in communication graphics, art administration, art therapy or to use their talents as studio artists. Students are well prepared to go on for their M.A. or M.F.A. degree.

Art Education
Silver Lake is known for an excellent Art Education Program with a high success rate for the Art Education graduates receiving employment in their field of study.

The Art Education degree assists the student in developing the advocacy for the arts and for the meaning of the creative process as future teachers and provides the professional training needed to be an art educator. The Licensure Program prepares art education students to receive a teaching license for Early Childhood through Adolescence (birth through age 21).

Careers in Art

Careers in the art field vary considerably. As we have stated, Silver Lake College has a very high placement rate for art education graduates. Art teachers who began their career in the 1960's will begin to retire soon, creating more job openings in the art education field. This will be a very good field to consider as you begin college.

The communication graphics field of art is the next best field to consider for employment. You must be a person who can utilize computers, be creative, work fast and like to design. People in this field are hired in advertising agencies, sign, photo and silk-screen companies, as free lance and web page designers, cartoonist and book illustrators. Employment opportunities in these areas are opening up in the Manitowoc and surrounding areas as more companies acquire computers for design and need artists to promote their companies through the internet, and other forms of marketing.

People interested in making a living as studio artists have a tremendous challenge in this present day. It is difficult to make a living as a studio artist without another form of income. But the arts are humanizing and society needs visual artists today to make this world a better place for all. This field is recommended for those people with great creativity and perseverance. They must want to create art, not for commercial purposes, but for inspiration, to awaken social consciousness, for the sake of beauty and truth.
