Simpson College (Department of Art )
Department of Art
Courses in the Department of Art provide a strong foundation in art skills, identify and strengthen conceptual and technical development as an artist, and match student competencies to the needs and requirements of the work world in art. The department emphasizes individual development and growth. The culmination of this growth is the senior show or project.
The Department of Art at Simpson is affiliated with Lorenzo di Medici Escuola di Arts, located in Florence, Italy. Students may study fashion merchandising, design, sculpture, art history, painting, printmaking and cinematography in a semester or year of study abroad at that institution. Opportunities for exposure to contemporary ideas in art are available through an extensive gallery program which brings professional artists to the campus for a series of exhibitions in the Farnham Galleries and for residencies on campus.
Farnham Gallery
Farnham Galleries at Simpson College is a non-profit organization that seeks to provide the Simpson campus and the surrounding community with opportunities to witness and experience artwork of professionally working artists. By presenting a wide range of artists and artistic styles and media, Farnham Galleries seeks to provide a fully diverse examination of the visual arts to the viewing public.
Farnham Galleries are located on the Simpson College campus, third floor of Mary Berry Hall on C Street. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Weekend hours can be arranged by request.
Music at Simpson
Music at Simpson offers a wide array of performances every year. From the Des Moines Metro Opera performing on campus each summer to visiting artists such as Maynard Ferguson and, our musical offerings run the gamut. The public is invited and welcomed at all of the Simpson College music performances.
Department of Music
Music at Simpson is widely recognized as offering a premier education for vocal, piano and instrumental students. We offer a program of instruction for students preparing to teach music, as well as for those who are preparing for graduate school and performing careers.
Music at Simpson is multi-faceted. We offer a wide variety of performing experiences - opera, choirs, band, jazz band and instrumental chamber music ensembles. Students also gain ample solo experience by performing in the weekly convocations and solo recitals. Simpson’s reputation for vocal and instrumental music is one of the best. All of the performing groups are open to non-music majors as well as music majors.
We are pleased to offer a series of concerts each year that includes a diverse group of professional performers. Past performers include Chanticleer, Maynard Ferguson and Eugene Rousseau.
Simpson music groups tour Europe every other year during May Term and perform annually at various stops around the Midwest. The Amy Robertson Music Center, featuring the Salsbury Hall of Music, is the perfect environment to study and recitals. The center holds multiple practice rooms, faculty studios, classrooms, rehearsal and concert halls.
Simpson has full membership in the National Association of Schools of Music.
Department of Theatre
Theatre Simpson is a dynamic community that views theatre as an avenue for personal discovery, self-discipline, creative expression and artistic excellence. Departmental courses and projects provide students with dynamic cultural and artistic experiences and help develop their abilities to observe, reflect, think critically and express themselves.
