Stetson University (College of Arts and Sciences)

Art
Major & Minor

Studying Art at Stetson University will help you develop personal styles and directions based on a strong foundation of artistic technique, design principles, art historical tradition, and contemporary artistic theories. While becoming technically adept, you will also develop the ability to think critically, analytically, and creatively in our liberal arts environment. Our small classes assure individual attention, and round-the-clock access to studios allows ample opportunity to work outside of class.

Stetson`s studio art program has particular strengths in painting, drawing, mixed media and ceramics. Other areas of concentration include photography and sculpture. The Department of Art is also actively involved in the Digital Arts major, a partnership of the Art and Computer Science departments and the School of Music. Many of our students double major in Digital Arts, or minor in Digital Arts or Art History.

Stetson offers a rich and varied program of visiting artists, lectures, and exhibitions that will broaden your exposure to contemporary art and artists. Recent lecturers and visiting artists have included Alison Saar, Samella Lewis, William Wiley, Patti Warashina, Michael Lucero, John Torreano, Carter Ratcliff, Jack Earl, Michael Rush, David Hickey, Vic Muniz, Zoe Leonard, Tania Bruguera, Donna Conlon, Graciella Sacco, Herb Jackson and John Paoletti. Stetson`s Duncan Gallery of Art also provides first-hand access to important new artwork. The gallery is a professional venue for students to show their work during the annual juried student art competition and the Senior Thesis Exhibition.

Digital Arts
Major & Minor

If you want to use the latest technology to help you reach your artistic goals, Stetson`s Digital Arts major may be for you. A collaborative effort of the Departments of Art and Computer Science, and the School of Music, Digital Arts offers you a solid foundation in one of those fields, while you investigate digital technology as a means of expression.

Our program fosters collaboration and hybrid forms of visual art, music composition, and programming that stretch the boundaries of artistic practice. You will explore the powerful inter-relationships among these disciplines in contemporary creative work.

With an expansive definition of art, we acknowledge the blurring boundaries between music, sound design, fine art, commercial art, science, psychology, sociology, literature, and other disciplines. Being part of an excellent College of Arts and Sciences and School of Music encourages this spirit of inclusiveness.

Liberal Arts in Music
Major & Minor

If you want to be involved in a liberal arts program of substance, while also taking part regularly in School of Music performances, consider majoring in Music within the College of Arts and Sciences. A cross-disciplinary program, operated jointly by Arts and Sciences (which grants the degree) and the School of Music, it is designed for those who wish to pursue a traditional Arts and Sciences curriculum while continuing to study music through lessons, recitals, and ensemble performances.

Theatre Arts
Major & Minor

At Stetson, theatre is a liberal art that prepares students for life beyond college, whether in the professional theatre, graduate study, or even a career path outside the theatre.

We are dedicated to providing a well-rounded, practical approach to the study and practice of theatre, striking a balance between study and application, between academic and professional opportunities, between performance and technology—with all students collaborating on an equal footing, whether as actors, technicians, designers, or directors.

The Department Communication Studies and Theatre Arts at Stetson University offers exciting opportunities for practical experience in and out of the classroom. You will find small classes, which provide maximum interaction between professors and students, and experienced faculty members who enjoy teaching undergraduates.

Outside the classroom, the theatre program helps you translate theory into action through performance. The Stetson dramatics production program focuses on undergraduates, which gives you the opportunity to play major roles under the direction of a faculty member.
