Lesley University (The Art Institute of Boston)
Founded by Roy Davidson in 1912 as the School of Practical Art, AIB's early philosophy was based upon John Ruskin's words that it is “in art that the heart, the head, and the hand of a man come together” and Davidson's own belief that "beauty comes from the use." Through the mid-twentieth century the school increasingly embraced the fine arts and developed a growing liberal arts curriculum. In 1967 the school was renamed The Art Institute of Boston to acknowledge its increased focus upon fine art as well as design, illustration, and photography. In 1999 an animation program was begun within the Department of Illustration. AIB is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD), a consortium of thirty-six leading art schools in the United States.
Since our founding, we have educated students for professions in the arts by balancing personal aesthetic development and intensive studies in the humanities, with practical career preparation. AIB has a talented faculty of working professional artists and noted scholars. They focus their combined perspectives and "real world" experiences to foster the development of each individual student. Our challenging curriculum emphasizes solid foundations in traditional art and design principles, time-proven methods of creative process, and strong intellectual concepts. As a result of our merger with Lesley University in 1998, our students now have the advantage of expanded educational resources.
Graduates of The Art Institute of Boston leave with the confidence to respond creatively and effectively to the constantly changing career landscape. An AIB education prepares students for a variety of artistic professions including: graphic design, web and multimedia design, book, advertising and editorial illustration, animation, documentary photography, photojournalism, fine arts photography, fine arts and art education. Our alumni create opportunities for themselves in other professions as well, from television and film production to performance art, dance, and puppetry.
We offer the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, three-year Diploma, two-year postbaccalaureate Advanced Professional Certificate programs, a low residency Masters of Fine Arts degree, as well as continuing and professional education, intensive workshops and pre-college courses.
The Art Institute of Boston is a school of Lesley University, which is rated as one of America's 'Best Colleges' by US News & World Report and named a 'Best Northeastern College' by the Princeton Review. Also included in the latest edition of Great Colleges for the Real World.
