The Ashland University Art Department seeks to provide education in the visual arts and to prepare students to function in a productive capacity within the larger culture, including the qualifications necessary for pursuit of graduate studies. The Department provides a comprehensive and contemporary approach to the field, and is committed to the maintenance of an environment that encourages seriousness of purpose in the creation, criticism, exhibition and understanding of art.

Objectives of the Art Program
The Ashland University Art Department seeks to provide education in the visual arts and to prepare students to function in a productive capacity within the larger culture, including the qualifications necessary for pursuit of graduate studies. The Department provides a comprehensive and contemporary approach to the field, and is committed to the maintenance of an environment that encourages seriousness of purpose in the creation, criticism, exhibition and understanding of art. The Department provides programs in Fine Art, Art Education, Commercial Art, and Computer Art and Graphics Programming. Within the context of a liberal arts institution, the Department strives to:
* develop in students high levels of technical skill, the ability to critically analyze their works of art, and the discipline to develop their ideas to the fullest extent possible
* maintain high educational standards
* promote the professional integrity of faculty and students
* instill in students the ability to think critically and solve problems creatively
* prepare future art educators
* provide a professional art exhibition program in the Coburn Gallery, and provide student art and other institutionally representative exhibition programs
* encourage a serious appreciation of the visual arts among all members of the campus community and make appropriate cultural opportunities available to the community as a whole
Facilities
The Art Department is equipped with six studio spaces, including dedicated areas in Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, and Computer Art. All of the studios are well equipped, well lighted, and fitted with the necessary air exchange systems to create a healthful environment. The Coburn Gallery provides between eight and ten exhibitions of contemporary, historical, and educational importance annually, including a juried student exhibition with cash awards. Student work is evaluated with a Foundations Review during the freshman year and a Concentration Review during the junior year. These reviews take place in Review Week, an annual event that also includes special activities in each of the major studio disciplines. All graduating students are required a Senior Exhibition, which takes place in the Coburn Gallery. Our art history classroom is decorated with actual works of historical art from the university’s extensive collection, and contains a well stocked slide library. We are committed to supporting an environment that encourages seriousness of purpose in the understanding, creation, and criticism of art.
The painting studio is well lighted and well equipped with easels and the work space is ideal for various sizes of projects.
The state-of-the-art computer lab equipped with 15 Macintosh G5 stations, 6 flat-bed scanners, b&w laser printers, color ink-jet printers, a 42" large format printer with archival ink, and an 8'x10' projection system.
The drawing studio is home to many of our foundations classes.
The sculpture studio houses woodworking tools, welding equipment, plaster, and general fabrication facilities.
The ceramics studio is equipped with sixteen wheels and 2 gas-fired kilns.

The Design and Art Education studio is ideal for our methods and foundations classes.
The Corburn Gallery provides exhibition space for nationally known artists, A.U. students and faculty, and regional artists to showcase their work.
The Art History classroom offers digital and slide projection on a full wall screen, as well a historical works of art.
