About Phoenix College

Phoenix College was founded in 1920 with just 53 students and has grown to become the flagship college of the Maricopa Community Colleges, a district that now ranks as the nation’s largest community college system and the single largest provider of higher education and career training in Arizona. Located near 12th Avenue and Thomas Road, Phoenix College is near the heart of the city’s business and cultural centers.

Today, more than 20,000 students each year prepare for university transfer, career training and advancement, or lifelong learning in one of the 200 degree and certificate programs.

Phoenix College's student body reflects the diverse, multicultural central city community it serves. In Spring 2005, 18% of our students were immigrants, refugees or foreign visitors. With a reported Hispanic student population of 30%, Phoenix College has been officially designated a Hispanic Serving Institution, gaining access to state and federal funding to further assist this growing segment.

The College is a vital player in the growth and revitalization of the central city, partnering with business, municipal and community organizations in employee training programs and cultural awareness workshops.

Since 1920, teaching, learning and student success have been the core values of Phoenix College’s commitment to the citizens of Phoenix and Arizona to Go Far, Close To Home.

Accreditation
Phoenix College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, a nationally recognized regional accrediting agency.

THE PHOENIX COLLEGE ART DEPARTMENT
Just as the people are the HEART of a school, the courses, programs, schedules, degrees and certificates are the content. The art department curriculum is varied and divergent, the opportunities for learning are as individual as the humans who come to this school.

THE PHOENIX COLLEGE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Phoenix College was established in 1920 and has been inspiring their music students ever since. Our faculty is comprised of nationally and internationally renowned performers, conductors, composers, scholars, and teachers. The Department is devoted to providing access to quality music education to all of its students. The music department offers a vast array of academic courses including: Composition, History, Music Technology, Multimedia, Theory, and audio Recording. The College also offers unique performance opportunities and experiences in various ensembles and private lessons. Whether you are a serious musician or would simply like to enrich your musical background, we hope that you will join us and share in our excitement.

With its varied, multicultural curriculum, the Music department strikes a chord with virtually all students. Courses are offered in many categories of classical and popular music, along with private instruction for voice and instrument. The Audio Production Technologies degree and certificate is geared toward students interested in audio recording and live sound.

Numerous scholarship opportunities are available for music majors and those who would like to perform in the Phoenix College band or choir. In addition, tuition waivers are offered for private instruction. Work-study programs and some part time wages are also available.

If you move on to complete your bachelor's degree at a university, career paths include music performance, music education, music therapy, composition for commercial music, and songwriting and the music business, which includes producing, managing a band, or becoming a recoding engineer. Phoenix College graduates have found employment in the Tucson Symphony, as music teachers in public schools, and as freelance producers, musicians, and performers who won't need a university degree.

Photography
Photography is a program in the applied visual arts that prepares individuals to use artistic techniques to effectively communicate ideas and information to business and consumer audiences and to record events and people through photography. It includes instruction in specialized camera and equipment operation and maintenance, applications to commercial and industrial needs, and photography business operations.
