Judson College-Alabama (The Fine and Performing Arts Division)

About Judson

HISTORY
As the nation's fifth oldest women's college, Judson, was founded in 1838 by Baptists in Marion to educate young women in a Christian environment. The independent, liberal arts college was named for Ann Hasseltine Judson, America's first female foreign missionary, and remains affiliated with the Alabama Baptist Convention. Judson is committed to a quality, valuable education for women of the future.

Academics

DEGREES
Judson offers a broad and challenging liberal arts curriculum that leads to a bachelor's degree. In addition to liberal arts majors, others offered include pre-professional programs such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, law, and engineering, to name a few.

INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
Judson provides opportunities for participating in foreign study programs through the American Institution of Foreign Study, Capstone International Studies Program, University of Oslo and University of London, the Museum of London, Cooperative Services International Education Consortium, and the Scandinavian Seminar.

SCHOLARSHIPS/FINANCIAL AID
Because of the generous support of Alabama Baptists and Judson alumnae and friends, we are able to offer numerous scholarships based on a variety of criteria. We strive to make a Judson education affordable to every young woman. In addition to scholarships, assistance is provided through need-based grants, loans, and campus work opportunities. More than 90 percent of our students receive some form of financial assistance.

Fine Arts

The Fine and Performing Arts Division of Judson College seeks to develop self-expression and creativity in all facets of the fine and performing arts disciplines, namely visual arts (painting, drawing, print making, photography, sculpture and design.), music (voice, choral, keyboard, instruments), drama, and dance.

Art majors are prepared for a variety of opportunities after graduation, including graduate schools, gallery management, museum administration and studio artists. Music majors may go on to graduate schools, become teachers in secondary and college music programs, become performers on stage from Carnegie Hall to the Metropolitan Opera, church musicians and leaders in their churches.

Degrees are offered the following areas:

* Art Studio
* Music or Music Education
* Church Music

We would love talk with you about your interests in:

* drama
* music theater
* or even ballet and dance

Or you may want to talk with us about an interdisciplinary degree, where you combine the study of music or art with another field like business or psychology.

For example: you may want to talk with us about how to prepare for a career as a Registered Music Therapist which is a combination of music and psychology.

About your love of:

* singing in choir
* painting and drawing
* playing an instrument
* or performing in a theatrical production

Regardless of the academic major you choose. For example, many students have chosen an area of study hoping to become a physician or lawyer or teacher, but they love music, art or theatre. Music is a passion, a release; it is a way to bring a balance to your academic rigors. Taking an elective in painting or drawing can be therapeutic and become a time to express your self visually. Maybe we will help you find ways to develop your talents and the love of the fine and performing arts that will prepare you for a lifetime of enjoyment, no matter what area you choose to major in.

You see, the faculty in our division are performers and artists themselves and are professionally active within their respective disciplines.

We love to create and perform.

And what we love most as professors is to help our students get ready to perform. At any given time, members of the Fine and Performing Arts Division can be found helping prepare their students for their first major art exhibition, or their senior music recital. Or, like Dr. Betty Campbell, professor of music and voice, has done not so long ago, help you dress and give you some last-minute coaching on your solo before you go on stage in Atlantic City for the Miss America Pageant.

Or we may be helping you get to Europe like we do every three years when we will take the entire choir on a two-week choir tour of the British Isles. Imagine yourself singing in the 1400 year-old Canterbury Cathedral or seeing a dozen actual Monet paintings at the National Gallery in London or seeing Les Miserables or Phantom of the Opera. Or maybe it's the Hard Rock Cafe' London that you really want to see. Or maybe it's all of the above! Your choice!

We would love to help you realize your dream of becoming a singer or pianist or instrumentalist or artist.

You may have already sensed God's leadership in your life toward a church-related career. The faculty in our division would love to share with you how we have found fulfillment through our service to God by doing something we loved.

We want to share your enthusiasm, help mold your skills and dreams, develop them to a fine edge by giving you the benefit of our faculty's significant experience, knowledge, and passion for the arts.
