Indiana University (The Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts)




The Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, founded in 1865, is today considered one of the premier art schools in the country. There are over 500 undergraduate majors and 162 graduate students pursuing courses in art history and studio practice.

An internationally distinguished faculty of 52 artists and art historians direct a wide range of programs. Studio areas include ceramics, drawing and painting, graphic design, metalsmithing and jewelry design, digital media/computer arts, photography, textiles, printmaking, and sculpture. The Department of Art History offers programs in Classical art, Medieval art, Renaissance and Baroque art, Modern art, the art of Africa, Oceania, and Pre-Columbia America, Asian art, and art theory. The curriculums are enriched by an active school exhibition gallery with visiting artists and art historians.Facilities include large studios and classrooms specifically designed to present visual material. Many resources are available to students such as the SoFA Slide Library which contains an outstanding collection of over 320,000 slides. The Fine Arts Library contains over 90,000 volumes and the exceptional collections of the Indiana University Art Museum are without compare.

The Henry Radford School of Fine Art is accredited by NASAD, The National Association of Schools of Art and Design.


Mission
The mission of the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University Bloomington is to fosteran aesthetic and intellectual environment in which the highest level of creativity and
critical thinking in the visual arts are studies, practiced and learned. Visual art is record and testimony of ideas manifested by cultures acros time and space. To continue and extend this human endeavor, professionals
inthe field of artistic practice and research engage others who will be able to capture the present, envision the future, and make it visible.

Indiana University School of Fine Arts, comprised of both Studio and History of Art Departments, advocates a balance of training in the practice, theory, and history of visual arts in order to understand
and enhance the human sensibility and its diverse petential. Visual thinking and its creative activity in Studio Art and scholarship in History of Art are enriched by the sophisticated dynamics of learning in a liberal arts
context and are challenged by the rigor of knowledge generation in a leading-edge research university.


Goals of the Hope Radford School of Fine Arts-Studio

* To increase students' knowledge of the expressive, intuitive, intellectual, and structural aspects of visual language through observation, exploration, discovery and practice.

* To stimulate intellectual cuiosity and its translation into visual art through memory, reason, and imagination while balancing craft with personal expression in traditional and new media.

* To develop students'expertise in tradicional practices in learning environment that encourages experimentation and invention.

* To promote the visual arts as a significant form of communication and expression throughout human history.

* To support the College of Arts and Sciences' sophisticated, strategic liberal art education that cultivates critical thinking and creativity necessary in the twenty-first century.
