University of Central Arkansas (Department of Art)

The Department of Art views educational achievement as both an individual and collective responsibility. Offering a variety of undergraduate programs in art, the department directs the educational progress of students toward quality research, creative practice, and public service. Art uniquely transforms those who create and those who respond. The department uses the transformative value of art to connect members of the community, enhancing and enriching lives, and making us more conscious of ourselves and others in the world.

In order to achieve this mission, the department has set the following goals:

* To challenge students with an intensive curriculum characterized by individualized instruction.

* To reward faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching, scholarly and creative endeavors, and community service.

* To maintain facilities and resources that foster opportunities to experience the creation, exhibition, and study of the visual arts.

* To provide opportunities for community involvement and broaden public awareness of the visual arts.

The University of Central Arkansas is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Degree programs follow a structured curriculum from admission to graduation and include a foreign language requirement. All art students experience the visual arts from diverse cultures and historical periods in an academic setting. BFA, fine arts, and art education students are screened through a portfolio review process, the Sophomore Major Advancement Interview, with emphasis placed on evidence that the student possesses artistic sensibilities and a strong commitment to higher education. These students are also required to participate in a senior exhibit during their final year of study.

Graphic Design

The Graphic Design program encourages students to be innovative while emphasizing strong technical skills. Students have access to the latest software in the Macintosh lab. UCA’s Student Chapter of the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Artists) gives students an insight into the developments in the industry and enables them to get feedback from various designers from the industry .

Art Education

Art education students work towards K-12 certification with professors who have many years of public school teaching experience at all levels. Art education courses give students real-life teaching experiences and provide the opportunity to develop curriculum and teaching strategies that utilize knowledge learned in studio and art history.

Photography

The Photography program is traditionally based with an opportunity for students to explore digital media. The department is equipped with processing facilities, access to a computer lab and a dark room. The classes are small enough for students to interact with faculty and get individual attention.

Printmaking

Printmaking courses provide students with experiences in intaglio, relief, screen-printing and lithographic processes. As students learn different techniques within these processes they are encouraged to explore their own subject matter and content.

Art History

The art history program provides students with the historical context necessary for understanding the arts as a transformative influence on humanity. With two art historians whose specialties encompass the world of art, from the most contemporary issues and movements, to the most ancient images ever made, from the Western traditions, to those of non-Western cultures, the department affords students the opportunity to pursue advanced art historical scholarship in areas as diverse as our modern humanistic tradition demands.

Ceramics

The ceramics department offers students the opportunity to explore a variety of building techniques from hand-built sculptural construction and throwing on a potter's wheel to making plaster molds and slip casting. The students achieve a technical understanding of the material by mixing their own clays and glazes and firing a variety of kilns. Students are simultaneously encouraged to experiment and to develop their visual and conceptual skills.

Sculpture

The Sculpture program offers classes that teach basis mold making, woodshop, stone carving, foundry, and metal fabrication. The program's recent upgrade of foundry equipment allows students to learn the art of bronze and aluminum casting using the ancient technique of "lost-wax" casting as well as sand casting. Our program is one of a very few in the state (if not the only one) that offers students the opportunity to learn the ancient art of iron casting using a cupola blast furnace.

Painting

Students in painting courses acquire experiences with a variety of materials and techniques. The program allows students the freedom to explore and develop their personal style.

Fine Art

The B.A. in Art with an emphasis in fine art is a liberal arts course of study for students with a strong commitment to making art. Studio and art history courses provide a broad, holistic education in the visual arts without a specific career focus.
