University of Cincinnati (University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning)

The University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, commonly referred to as DAAP, is a college of the University of Cincinnati. Located in the university's main campus in Cincinnati, Ohio, DAAP is one of the most highly-ranked design schools in the US and the world.

For 2005, the graduate architecture program was ranked second in the nation after Harvard and ranked as the most innovative architecture program in the nation. The interior design program was ranked first in the nation, as well, in the annual survey of professionals conducted by DesignIntelligence. New to the list in 2006 was the school's Industrial Design program, making its way to the top of the list at #2, beating out Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, and second only to the prestigious Art Center College of Design in California. The combination of these three top-ranking disciplines gave the college of DAAP the title as the Best Art College in the nation. The University of Cincinnati was also the only public school listed in I.D. Magazine's list of the top ten design schools worldwide.

Two of "The New York Five" architects are graduates of the University of Cincinnati's architecture program: Michael Graves and John Hejduk.

The college is distinguished for its mandatory co-operative education program, which was first conceived at the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering in 1906. Students alternate between working as paid employees in design firms and attending classes, giving them experience that enables them to easily enter the workplace after graduation. Students are required to spend a certain amount of time in the workplace, usually adding up to several years of job experience, before they are able to graduate. This extends most of the programs that would normally be four-year programs into five or more years.




College Mission Statement
The College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati is charged with undergraduate and graduate education in the design, environmental and art disciplines. It is committed to: responsible change and development in those disciplines; excellence in teaching and learning, research and creative works; and sharing the benefits of these activities with the university, the allied professions and the general community.

The college shares the universal concerns of higher education: the discovery, identification, preservation and dissemination of knowledge; the education of people in search of a rich and meaningful existence; and the creation, study, integration and interpretation of design and art. These concerns are implemented through works and studies which are academically rigorous, aesthetically superior, technically sound and socially responsible.

The college is unique in this country. Since the turn of the century, programs have grown in quality and diversity. Today, the excellence and range of curriculum, the professional practice (co-op) experiences, the quality of students, and the scholarly and creative achievements of faculty are and will continue to be the college's major strengths. Graduate degrees are offered in Design, Architecture (M. Architecture & MS Architecture), Art Education, Art History, Fine Arts, Community Planning and Regional Development Planning (PhD). Undergraduate degrees are offered in Digital Design, Fashion (Design Track & Product Development Track), Graphic Design, Industrial (Design Track & Trasportation Track), Architecture, Interior Design, Art History, Fine Arts, Urban Planning and Urban Studies.

The college anticipates, identifies, and catalyzes change in areas of special concern to the professional with which it is allied. Participation in local, regional, national, and international forums provides an agenda to structure the substantive aspects of teaching, research and creative endeavors in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning.




About the College
The college is housed in the Aronoff Center for Design and Art, a 64,000-square-foot addition, which opened in 1996 and linked together the previously existing Alms, DAAP and Wolfson buildings. Designed by renowned architect Peter Eisenman, the Aronoff Center has generated much national and international critical attention. The expanded facility has enabled all of our programs to be housed together under one roof for the first time in our over 75-year history.

Many of the college's classrooms are equipped with state of the art video projection systems. In addition to studios, workshops, laboratories, lecture and seminar rooms, the college has a number of specialized facilities which support its programs.

School of Design

Undergraduate and graduate programs empower students in our School of Design with a core of knowledge that provides a solid educational base. Our students are prepared for careers in Digital, Fashion, Graphic, and Industrial Design by a passionate faculty, and through rigorous academic endeavors, complemented by an invaluable professional practice program. The objective is to prepare professionals to operate in local and global markets, and to respect diversity in the human community. Our School is innovative in teaching and in transforming design disciplines by applying the newest technologies. Through inspired interdisciplinary projects, and promising corporate partnerships, we are devoted to furthering our pioneering role as a leading design institution.
School of Architecture and Interior Design (SAID)

The School of Architecture and Interior Design at the University of Cincinnati prepares students for critical engagement with practice. This critical engagement presupposes sustained evaluation of principles, traditions, and requirements of building in all its aspects, interior and exterior. Our goal is to advance the professions of architecture and interior design by combining ethical judgment and technical proficiency in pursuit of excellence, whether the product of our expertise is a physical or intellectual construction.
School of Art

The School of Art offers undergraduate degrees in Art History and Fine Arts under the guidance of their respective faculties, with an option for Visual Arts Teacher Licensure for those majors with an interest in public school teaching.
School of Planning

The School of Planning at the University of Cincinnati offers outstanding academic and professional preparation for a career in planning. One of the largest academic planning units in the country, the 17 full-time faculty members and rich array of adjuncts supervise the only school or department in the United States offering an accredited undergraduate planning degree with required cooperative education, an accredited master's degree offered in a number of options and a doctoral degree in planning. The faculty is well-balanced, with an excellent record of scholarship, significant professional practice and highly visible service and outreach.
